OLYMPIA – During the week of Jan. 26, Miguel Perez of Seattle served as a page in the Washington State Senate. Sen. Pramila Jayapal, D-Seattle, sponsored Perez’s weeklong experience in the Legislature.

“It was my pleasure to sponsor Miguel,” said Jayapal. “He was engaged and helpful and I hope he enjoyed his week with us in the Senate.

”Pages spend a week at the Capitol where they assist senators and staff, attend lectures with guest speakers and go to page school where they create their own bills in a mock committee setting. Perez originally applied to the page program because of his interest in government and law.

“It was interesting to learn more about how laws are really made,” Perez said – adding a highlight was meeting and talking to Jayapal during his week in Olympia. “She seems really hardworking and she’s a great leader,” he said.

Perez said other highlights of the page program included attending page school and helping in the Senate during floor action.Perez, 16, is a sophomore at South Lake High School.

After high school, Perez wants to become a lawyer. He also enjoys playing sports.
