Rainier Valley Greenways has identified some top priorities to improve safety on Rainier Ave S. and to place value on Safety over Speeding ( We also have created a petition to gather support for these priorities at http://seattlegreenways.org/neighborhoods/rainier-valley/  please sign in support of a safer Rainier Ave!

  1. Safe Speeds of 25 MPH along Rainier Avenue South and 20 MPH engineered in our community centers of Columbia City, Hillman City, and Rainier Beach with enforcement.
  2. Safe & Dignified Crossings of Rainier Ave S where people driving stop for people walking, and people walking have enough to time cross before the traffic light changes.
  3. A Safe Place for People to Bike on Rainier Ave S.

 

SDOT will be discussing their new draft plans on how to improve Rainier Ave S. at two upcoming meetings- please come to the meetings and have your voice be heard!

SDOT invites you to review potential safety improvements for Rainier and provide feedback on possible design changes at one of the following meetings:

Thursday, February 26, 2015

The Columbia School – Cafeteria/Commons

Tuesday, March 3, 2015

6:00 – 8:00 PM

The Ethiopian Community Center

* SDOT will provide additional information about upcoming transportation projects in the Rainier Beach neighborhood at this meeting

As you can see below, SDOT has completed Phase I & 2 and is currently in Phase 3 of the Rainier Ave Safety Corridor project.

Anticipated Schedule:

 X PHASE 1 Issue Identification Meetings (Feedback Sessions) In November 2014, SDOT will host a series of community engagement meetings where they will share traffic data, listen to community concerns, and develop strategies to lower vehicle speeds and reduce collisions.
X PHASE 2 Conceptual DesignsBetween December 2014 – February 2015,  SDOT will define roadway improvement alternatives based on community input and data.
 X PHASE 3  Design Alternative Review MeetingsIn February 2015, SDOT will hold a series of community meetings to review proposed design alternatives,  potential implementation timeline, and gather feedback from the community.
 X PHASE 4 Announcement of Preferred AlternativeIn April/May 2015, SDOT will hold several open house style meeting(s) to review SDOT’s preferred alternative and implementation schedule.
 X PHASE 5 ImplementationSDOT will implement in Spring or Summer of 2015
