SEATTLE – Foodies and urban adventurers! We are celebrating the Fifth Anniversary of Plate of Nations’ “local venues with global menus” by going green March 27 – April 12 ! The signature dine around event of the MLK Business Association, Plate of Nations 2015 focuses on sustainability by featuring enticing vegetarian options at each venue, as well as the commitment of all participants to join the Seattle Green Business Program.
Plate of Nations showcases the delicious diversity at independently-owned restaurants at the heart of one of the most ethnically-diverse communities in the country. Twelve local venues along MLK Jr. Way South in the Rainier Valley are participating in Plate of Nations 2015, with sharable global menus for $15 or $25.
Participating restaurants include Café Ibex (Ethiopian), Bananas Grill (Somali, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern), Foo Lam (Mandarin/Cantonese Dim Sum), Huarachitos Cocina Mexicana (Mexico City), Huong Duong (South Vietnamese), Joy Palace (Cantonese), Momona (Eritrean), Olympic Express (Southeast Asian/Cham Vietnamese Halal), The Original Philly’s (American East Coast), Othello Wok & Teriyaki (Pan Asian), Rainier Restaurant (Vietnamese), and Thai Savon (Laotian/ Thai). Each of these restaurants will feature a special vegetarian dish for the event including Vegetarian Vietnamese crepes, Tacos al Verduras a la Parrilla (handmade tortillas filled with grilled vegetables, smothered in guajillo tomato sauce), and Shiro (Ethiopian style stew prepared from ground beans, peppers, onion).
In an additional effort to “go green” every business has committed to joining the Seattle Green Business Program through Seattle Public Utilities in preparation for the event. The Seattle Green Business Program invites businesses to “Get on the Map” by engaging in sustainable efforts. In addition to encouraging good environmental stewardship, the program offers technical support to businesses to help them save money on their utility bills and get marketing support for their actions. To help get the word out, Seattle Public Utilities is a major sponsor for Plate of Nations 2015.
Back this year is the popular Passport contest offering opportunities to win prizes by collecting stamps for dining at participating restaurants. Grand Prize for the Passport contest will be a private Thai and Laotian cooking class for 4 people with Thai Savon chef-owner Faye George. More prizes will be available through additional contests on Facebook throughout the event.
Plate of Nations was launched in 2011 by the MLK Business Association to create a festive event where MLK restaurants can showcase some of their favorite dishes with special menus that invite customers to experience their cultural traditions. Last year the event drew diners from 42 Seattle Neighborhoods, 29 cities throughout WA, and 4 different states, and brought tens of thousands of dollars into the local small business economy.
Plate of Nations 2015 is sponsored by the MLK Business Association, Grow Seattle – City of Seattle’s Office of Economic Development, Seattle Public Utilities, Vulcan, HomeSight, The Stranger, KBCS, Rainier Valley Community Development Fund and Penniless Projects.
