Movies: SeedArts Cinema: Homegrown Documentaries Kickoff– Details:The SEEDArts Cinema Series, “Homegrown Documentaries” opens this Friday with Evergreen: The Road to Legalization (3/27 at 7pm). On Saturday, we present Oil & Water (3/28 at 5pm), and My Last Year with the Nuns (3/28 at 7pm).Each film will be followed by a community conversation with the filmmakers and moderated by Rustin Thompson, the Restless Critic.On Saturday, we’ll also host a screening of a work-in-progress at 3pm. This event is held in collaboration with the Seattle Documentary Association. It is free and open to the public.Admission to the Cinema Series is $5 per film.

This spring’s event also features an exhibit showcasing the history of the Bemis Building. As always, resident artists will open their studios for you, and you can view the juried show of visiting artists throughout the expansive halls. This is an excellent opportunity to see well-established and emerging professionals in the unique environment of their working studios. The historic 150,000 square foot factory building located near Safeco Field is home to painters, photographers, glass artists, filmmakers, sculptors, fashion designers, and many others. For nearly a century, the towering letters of the Bemis Company sign have dominated the skyline just south of Pioneer Square, marking the edge of Seattle’s industrial district. Music: Tom Varner Nonet/ WACO plays Holcomb & Varner– Details: Internationally reknowned as one of the foremost proponents of jazz and improvised music for the French horn Tom Varner is also an inventive, witty, and passionate composer. Varner’s compositions have garnered awards such as the 2000 Jazz Composers Alliance Julius Hemphill Composition Award, and been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered. His 1997 album, Martian Heartache, (Soul Note) was voted as one of the top ten releases of the year in numerous jazz publications. An annual DownBeat Critics Poll winner, Varner has performed as a leader at the Vienna Koncerthaus and the Seixal/Lisbon, Moers, Groningen, and Rotterdam Jazz Festivals, as well as countless appearances in the New York area with Steve Wilson, Ed Jackson, Billy Hart, and Tom Rainey. As a sideman, Varner has toured with the Mingus Orchestra, the Vienna Art Orchestra, Bobby Watson, Jane Ira Bloom, Jim McNeeley, Quincy Jones and Miles Davis. Since relocating to Seattle 2005, Varner has enjoyed playing at the Vancouver, Earshot, and Bumbershoot festivals, as both a leader and a sideman with artists such as Mark Taylor, Eric Barber, Hans Teuber, Wayne Horvitz, Jim Knapp, and Phil Sparks. He is currently on the jazz faculty of Cornish College of the Arts. WACO plays Holcomb & Varner: WACO (Washington Composers Orchestra) was created in 2008 by Robin Holcomb, Wayne Horvitz, and Tom Varner.
