Music: Nancy K Dillion and Clay States– Details:The Clay States did not stumble upon their sound. There is an obvious intent to their music, and a beautiful formality that’s natural, melodic, thoughtful, and has a tinge of classic country twang. These are songs a twenty-year-old could listen to with an 80-year-old and find equally enjoyable. It’s not uncommon for first-time audiences of The Clay States to glance around the venue, a song or two into a set, as if to reassure themselves that they’re still in the same place–and same era–as they were just minutes before. The Alabama-based duo’s stories come from the past so straight and undiluted that they can be unsettling at first, like scenes from a documentary made before cinema was invented. With her new album, A Game of Swans, songwriter Nancy K. Dillon harkens back to her immigrant roots in both the New World and the Old Country, tapping into ancestral strains of Celtic folk culture that have always run beneath the surface of her music. Inspired by the disparate migratory paths taken by both her Southern Loyalist and Scots-Irish Presbyterian forebears as they aimed towards a better future, she herself took flight into the vast American West which still looms large in her imagination. New songs for the album (originals, collaborations & covers by Drew Nelson, Janni Littlepage and Pat Long) draw characters from lost gold mines, haunted pioneer cabins, immigrants’ prayers and Civil War last chances. As a patchwork quilt holds pastel memories of summer dreams and dresses, her songcatcher sensibilities capture ephemera of the American story. – Time: 6:00pm – Where: The Royal Room (5000 Rainier Avenue South Seattle, WA 98118)- More Info: http://www.theroyalroomseattle.com
