Movies: Beacon Hill Meaningful Movies: Watershed – Details: The film Watershed asks these questions– Can we meet the needs of a growing population? Can we find harmony among the competing interests of cities, agriculture, industry, recreation, wildlife and indigenous communities with rights to the water?  The current uses of Colorado River water (serving 30 million people) prevent it from reaching its outlet at the Gulf of California.  Encroaching salt water into groundwater supplies endanger agriculture and wildlife habitat.  Watershed highlights personal stories of water users along the river and presents a solution than may serve the needs of all. Community: Urban Mix 101 presented by Itech 4 Life Solutions– Details: An intro to the fundamentals of Digital Audio Recording and Music production. Students will be familiarized with the Protools(DigiDesign) work environment as well as the Reasons workspace. Students will also be introduced to an analog mixing console and learn how the digital and analog systems correlate in a typical recording environment. Art: Orchid Journeys: A Writing Expedition Into Deborah Moore’s Glass Orchidarium – Details: The world of orchids occupies both the fantastic and the real. They evoke stories through their names and their shapes—a ghost growing in air, a monkey staring back. Even more fantastic is the supernatural world created by glass. Ms. Moore’s work gives permission to the impossible. Through a two-hour workshop, participants will discover the impossible through explorative writing journeys to vistas where “how and why” stories frolic along with fables and poems. Building on our walk through the Glass Orchidarium created by Debora Moore, images of living orchids, observations and reflections gathered from watching creation occur through glass and the natural world, we will use prompts to generate writing across genres. We will stay focused on short forms to be enjoyed by all.
