Jayapal Annouces Bid For Congress

by Antonio Foster

Flanked by supporters and family members, 37th District State Senator Pramila Jayapal today announced her intention to run for Washington State’s 7th congressional seat.

The seat is being vacated by Congressman Jim McDermott, who announced last month he would not seek re-election. McDermott has held the position since his election in 1989.

In her announcement speech, given to a packed room at Seattle Central Community College, Jayapal pledged to fight against a system “rigged for corporations and the wealthy.”

“The time has come to tackle this inequality: we need to raise the minimum wage, expand Social Security and Medicare, and ensure debt-free college for young people across America,” she said.

The Democratic state senator’s name circulated as a potential candidate soon after McDermott revealed he was opting to retire from Congress.

Jayapal, who has served as a state senator since January 2015, joins Washington State representative Brady Walkinshaw, and King County Councilmember Joe McDermott in vying for the open seat.
