Media: Press for the People: A Grassroots Media Workshop– Detail: Participants will learn how to generate story ideas, identify and interview sources, navigate and pitch to local media, produce multi-media photo, audio, and video stories, and connect with local editors with whom they can pitch future story ideas. They’ll also have the opportunity to take part in a Seattle Channel video storytelling booth to share their perspective on current local challenges and opportunities. The day will close with an open reception for reporters, editors, civic leaders, local residents, and friends to join in networking and a headshot photo booth. Coffee bar and lunch provided! Community: Rainier Beach Report Card Presentation– Details: You are invited to engage with University of Washington Sociology undergraduates in a presentation of the Rainier Beach Neighborhood Report Card [Phase 1]. There has been a lot of positive changes and significant progress made in Rainier Beach in the last few years. To name just a few, crime has decreased, student achievement has increased, public facilities and some businesses have been renovated, community engagement programs have been more visible, and public art continues to expand.So how is Rainier Beach doing? Rainier Beach Action Coalition has requested UW to develop a Rainier Beach Neighborhood Report Card in order to report on progress and direct problem solving efforts towards specific goals or standards. The last few months, UW students have been working on Phase 1 of the neighborhood report card. They will present Rainier Beach’s progress in 5 place-based areas that contribute to the health and safety of Rainier Beach: Look, Feel, Safety, Parks and Open Spaces, and Getting Around. The recommendations from this report card will further inform RBAC in their calls to action focused on improving neighborhood health and safety. Community: Dedication Ceremony for the King and Queen of Rainier Beach – Details: Come join Mayor Ed Murray, the Rainier Beach Merchants Association , Seattle Police Department Denise “Cookie” Bouldin, Office of Arts & Culture Seattle director, Randy Engstrom and artist Peter Reiquam for the dedication of The King and Queen of Rainier Beach, a sculpture inspired by Seattle Police Detective, Denise “Cookie” Bouldin and the chess clubs she has organized throughout the Rainier Beach community for over a decade. The sculpture was created as part of SDOT’s Safe Routes to School project at Rainier Ave S and 51st Ave S. Music: Rockin Teenage Combo/ Maurice and His Thing-Details: Rockin’ Teenage Combo has been known for many years as a Jazz/Funk group with heavy use of odd-time signature grooves and convoluted arrangements. Nowadays, with band members scattered around the state, rehearsals are rare and so more and more they are required to call upon their skills in improvisation. As a result, things have become more streamlined with an emphasis on FUNK. Each member has a certain area of expertise as well. Dara is exploring the world of Flying Lotus, utilizing her mastery of chord voicings and texture to bring sexy back. PK is channeling his longtime devotion to Bootsy and holding grooves down, while paying tribute to Jaco by bringing fretless bass into the mix. Olli has been playing a lot of old-school Soul feels for years now, bringing to it his usual unusual perspective and fresh approaches to time-honored traditions.
