Community: Juneteenth Celebration– Details Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that theenslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation – which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. Food: Latin Cooking Class– Details: Class will begin promptly at 10:00 AM in the kitchen at El Centro de la Raza. All cooking supplies and ingredients will be provided, but please bring your own apron. The class focuses on the traditional preparation of authentic traditional latin dishes. The dishes are prepared in the handmade and traditional fashion using cultural ingredients. No substitutions can be made, but after the class we can provide an alternate vegetarian recipe upon request. We look forward to meeting you!
