KUOW to Host Listening Tour in Columbia City Tonight
Reporters and producers from KUOW will be visiting Columbia City tonight as part of their Summer Listening exploring growths impact on the region. KUOW is seeking to gather opinions on how the issue is impacted the day-to-day lives of residents. The radio station is also hoping to gather an idea of under-reported news in the area. The event will take place tonight from 6:30 – 8:00 pm at the Southside Commons building (3518 S Edmunds Street Seattle, WA 98118)
Seattle Youth Choose Seven Projects for City to Fund
The city of Seattle announced the project winners of Youth Voice, Youth Choice, the City’s new Participatory Budgeting (PB) initiative in which youth decided how to spend $700,000 of the City’s budget. More than 3000 youth ages 11-25 voted on 19 project proposals during the final two weeks of May.
The seven winning projects are:
- Houses for People Experiencing Homelessness
- Youth Homeless Shelter Improvements
- Job Readiness Workshops for Homeless Youth
- Homeless Children and Youth Liaison Services
- Wi-Fi Hotspot Checkout
- Park Bathroom Upgrades
- Safe Routes to Schools
The process began in January with several assemblies where the public brainstormed ideas for projects it would like to see in their communities. The 20 youth delegates turned those ideas into 19 concrete proposals with help from Seattle Department of Neighborhoods and City staff. Now that the choices have been made, City staff and local agencies will implement the projects.
South Shore 6th Graders to Host Fence Art Installation
Sixth graders at South Shore elementary will host a Fence Art Installation on Tuesday June 21 from 9am to 2pm at Beer Sheva Park. Part of the installation is made from recyclables students collected during the year for their sciences classes. The students worked hard over that time to clear out evasive species along the fence line to make way for their artwork. The event will feature students sharing stories about Native plants, the Rainier Valley Farm and Wetlands, and demonstrations of their science projects.
