Community: Costumed Community Cleanup– Details: Join the Hillman City Business Association and your neighbors for the 2nd annual Costumed Clean Up. A fun morning of costumes and making Hillman City shine a little bit brighter. Tin Umbrella Coffee will be supplying drip coffee to get us going. After the clean up Big Chickie will be providing a celebratory chili lunch for volunteers and there will be beer specials thanks to Slow Boat Tavern. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes, spirted leaf raking and haunting trash collection. We will have some tools but please bring work gloves and a rake or witches broom if you have one to work with. Community: Seward Park Audubon Center Fall Native Plant Sale (Day 1)– Details: The weekend of October 22nd and 23rd is the perfect time to prepare your yard for our wintering feathered friends. In conjunction with the recent launch of National Audubon’s “Plants for Birds” campaign, Seward Park Audubon Center will be offering many varieties of locally sourced, healthy native plants for sale along with expert advice for selection, planting, and care, at its annual Fall Native Plant Sale. Native plants provide birds and other wildlife with a greater variety of food sources and shelter, and play a vital role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. Having evolved within our indigenous ecosystem, native plants support the diet of native insects, native birds, and other wildlife. Music: Carrie Newcomber – Details: Singer-songwriter Carrie Newcomer invites listeners to “pause the perpetual motion” of their lives with her new album, The Beautiful Not Yet (September 16, 2016). “Life is always lived between then and soon, right here and now, in the beautiful not yet,” Newcomer says. On the album and in a companion book of poems and essays, she explores how we might live more present, engaged lives, even in the face of division, uncertainty, or heartbreak. Dubbed a “prairie mystic” by the Boston Globe, Newcomer is acclaimed for her “deep, rich alto and penchant for exquisite melodies,” both on gorgeous display on the new record. So is the deeply spiritual view of the world that grows out of her contemplative Quaker faith. “I’ve always been more intrigued by good questions than easy answers,” she says. “Questions like, what sustains and connects us? Where do we find help in hard times? When I stop and pull back the layers of distraction, what is at the very heart of my life?” Newcomer considers herself a spiritual progressive, and is a prominent voice for interfaith dialogue and social justice. Music: The Kitchen Radio –Details: Kitchen Radio was Seattle’s conduit to the Jayhawks and Son Volt during the city’s 1990s grunge heyday. Their emphasis on songwriting and craft – fused with heavy grooves – set them on a path to touring and a full-length release on Glitterhouse records, Sub Pop’s European partner. Their untimely break-up in 1996 predated the deep indie-roots / alt-country scene Seattle now enjoys.
