Sunday Stew: Lament

by Laura Wright Landrum

As we watch you build that tower of Babel

We lament your greed that devours the sky

That burns the prodigal kiss

We lament the one who scorns the dove with his military tongue coated with oil

Who has forgotten the gift of living water

We lament those lips turning to silver Shivering with tear gas and bullets

We lament this deepening social amnesia

That has forgotten the true cost of its wealth and leisure

This lament is our truth that we will stare this brutal history straight into its eye

Until it offers us something new
