Music: Jim Kweskin and Meredith Axelrod – Details: Jim Kweskin is probably best known as a singer and bandleader. He also created one of the bedrock guitar styles of the folk revival, adapting the ragtime-blues fingerpicking of artists like Blind Boy Fuller to the more complex chords of pop and jazz. He has maintained a remarkably consistent musical vision since his jug band days, continuing to explore traditional folk and blues with the sophisticated sensibility of a jazz musician and jazz with the communal simplicity of a folk artist. He has recorded solo ventures, as a member of the U and I band, and with U and I bandmate Samoa Wilson, and continues to perform widely in various formats. Music: Shock Opera: The (Un)Authorized Alice Cooper Story – Details: Written and directed by GuignolFest’s founder, Dylan Hillerman, the one-night only revival of “Shock Opera” will come to Columbia City Theater, on Friday, July 14, 2016, at 7pm. Tickets are $20 general admission and $30 VIP. “Shock Opera: The Authorized Alice Cooper Story”, riddled with themes of: friendship, drug-abuse, shock value, celebrity status, gender-bending, every deadly sin, and love— is guaranteed to be a sold out event. A portion of tickets sales go to youth causes: Solid Rock (Alice Cooper Foundation, Phoenix, AZ) and AMP (Artist Mentorship Program, Portland, OR). The multi-media play is the first in the world to feature the history of the Alice Cooper band. Alice Cooper himself has encouraged the troupe to “Keep doing what you’re doing. I want to hear more!” Dennis and Vincent, two high school track-stars obsessed with girls, surrealist art, rock & roll and horror movies, form a band eventually known as the pioneering and darkly-theatrical Alice Cooper. But when ultimately drug-addled Vincent/Alice begins to talk with a future reflection of himself in a hotel mirror, the play takes you on a roller coaster story about the group that invented the rock show. We attempt to top their early shows with a bit of innovative theatrical spectacle never before seen until 2016, as an homage to their legendary influence on popular culture. They arguably invented Glam (wearing shiny dresses before Bowie, etc.), Punk (rocking Detroit before The Ramones, etc.), and Goth (singing about bad juju before Siouxsie and the Banshees, etc.). Food: Pozole Making Cooking Class at El Centro de la Raza – Details: El Centro de la Raza (The Center for People of All Races) offers tamale making classes and is expanding class offerings! Learn how to cook our favorite dishes, share in our culture, and meet new people all at the same time! Class fees benefit our Senior Nutrition & Wellness Program. Pozole has its roots in the Nahuatl language. Pozolli, pronounced Pozo-lee, is a traditional Mesoamerican stew known for its main ingredients of red or green chile, meat and the hominy maize corn. This meal in a bowl is indigenous to the tribes living among the U.S. Southwest and Mexico that include the Hopi, Pueblos, the Aztecs and many others. Because of migration patterns by indigenous peoples and the commerce that took place prior to the arrival of the Spanish, indigenous peoples exchanged goods and ideas, this included foods and recipes. Pozolli dates back as far as the tamale and was often viewed as a celebratory meal. This is why today we prepare Pozole for important celebrations, holidays and times of rites of passage. Little has changed from its original ingredients that we still use today. Music: Brazilian Duo Claudia Villela & Vitor Gonçalves– Details: Giordano Productions presents an intimate evening with the extraordinary Brazilian vocalist Claudia Villela and Brazilian pianist and accordionist Vitor Gonçalves at the historic Columbia City Theater. Described by one of the fathers of the bossa nova as “the biggest expression of Brazilian music in the U.S. today,” pianist and vocalist, Claudia Villela boasts an astounding five-octave range, a distinctive songwriting style, and a flair for risk taking that has earned her an enthusiastic following. Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, she sings mostly in Portuguese, and “is a supremely inventive scat singer, who has honed a vivid vocabulary of sounds that can evoke the hollow thump of a tabla drum, the muted trumpet of Miles Davis, the insistent twang of a berimbau, the ethereal call of a flute, or the distortion-laden Stratocaster licks of Jimi Hendrix.” Also from Rio, pianist, accordionist, composer and arranger Vitor Gonçalves relocated to New York in 2012 to “deepen his pursuit of jazz and its connection with Brazilian music, and to explore the diverse musical melting pot that is New York City” after an illustrious career in Brazil, playing with such icons as Hermeto Pascoal, Maria Bethânia, Itiberê Zwarg and many others.
