On Friday, fans of completely spontaneous, electronic free-form jazz will be in for a treat.
In 1997, 4 different band leaders and key contributors to the modern avant-garde scene came together to create a fully improvisational quartet. 3 of the original 4 members, Wayne Horvitz( keys, electronics), Bobby Previte (drums) and Skerik (saxophone, electronics), with one roster change, Mike Gamble (guitar) replacing Dave Palmer (keys, electronics), will take the stage of The Royal Room as the critically acclaimed, constantly changing, uncategorical power-house that is Ponga.
Ponga pounds and pummels its way through the trenches of exploratory free-form avant-garde on its path to an astral plane of electronic futuristic freak-funk. An entirely improvisational experiment in a live setting. Instruments and live samples are modulated and tweaked creating a dystopic industrial soundscape.Ponga
Wayne Horvitz’ pulsating synthesized basslines are integrated with organic instruments such as wurlitzer, rhodes, and melodica. Supported by an unstoppable rhythmic onslaught provided by drumming phenom Bobby Previte, and flavored with Skerik’s unique saxophone wizardry, which is cerebral and truly trance-inducing.
Skerik describes his experience performing with Panga.
“I play with all of these people regularly anyway so it’s not something that hasn’t happened in 20 years. Bobby Previte is one of the baddest rock drummers on earth and one of the best compositional improvisers, so when all four improvisers are on stage together it’s very easy to have great moments. Dave Palmer was a great force of nature, and the band did start as a trio, so I’m excited for Mike Gamble to be with us. Wayne and Bobby gave me some of my first musical opportunities in the 90’s and I will be forever thankful to them for showing me the way and trusting me. They are mentors and friends. Can’t wait.”
Wayne Horvitz also expressed his excitement for Friday’s performance.
“Anytime Bobby Previte comes to town it’s a big deal.”
