South End Stew: A War Of Attrition (A His and Her Circumstance)

by K.D. Senior

We beg and plead,
Amorous passion throws itself in a tantrum,
while we hiss and cuss,
romantic, and perilous.
Love is a war of attrition and we’ve had enough.

We grind our teeth,
as patience ties itself in knots while we kvetch and fuss,
Contemptuous and abominable,
love is a war of attrition that costs us much.

We yell and scream,
As sticks and stones give way to cuts,
Chipping away at glass houses till they are milled to dust,
staggering, and jaundiced,
love is a war of attrition that rots our guts.
