Tasveer South Asian Film Festival
11-day event, begins tonight!—“Tasveer South Asian Film Festival is the largest South Asian film festival in the United States. Seeking to provide a counterpoint to the images and stories prevalent in main stream South Asia and Bollywood, the festival encourages an atmosphere of thoughtful dialogue and creative inquiry, where filmmakers and audiences engage in lively discussions, forums, and other collaborative interactive formats. In 2018, the festival will screen over 65 films and welcome 5000 attendees over 11 days, in 5 cities.
While Pakistan is the festival focus for 2018 and the festival theme is #KnowMe, TSAFF 2018 will include films–shorts, experimental work, documentaries, and narratives of any length–on themes related to South Asia in its entirety: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the various diasporas across the world. Films with a focus on issues of human rights and social justice will be a highlight of the festival again this year.” Tasveer is a non-profit film and arts organization. Tasveer’s mission is to inspire social change through thought-provoking film and arts.

“Grrrl Justice” Premiere – Local Sightings Festival at Northwest Film Forum
“Grrrl Justice is a short narrative film exploring the pathways of girls and queer youth of color into the juvenile justice system. It uses gender and sexuality as a framework for understanding their rising rates of incarceration. Food Foresting Workshop
“Learn about food forests and edible understory plants as you install them at the Wetmore Community Farm. We’ll be planting an edible understory at the edge of the farm under the existing tree canopy. This food forest will host dry shade tolerant native and unique edible plants that will be available for harvest at different times of year.
Presenters Jake Harris and Marco Downs of Stone Soup Gardens help turn streets, parking lots, and under-utilized spaces into community farms. They are honored to be collaborating with Alleycat Acres as the designers and constructors of Wetmore Community Farm, and look forward to sharing their love of tasty plants!”

DNDA’s Let’s Talk Race Series 2018—“What is justice? What is freedom? Who decides This half-day event will explore these questions and the intersections of policy and institutionalized racism through the film 13th. The film will be screened in two segments, followed by dialogue and storytelling to deepen our understanding of how the 13th amendment and U.S. history play a role in perpetuating systemic oppression.
Workshop goals:
1. Participants will learn about the historical context of the 13th amendment.
2. We will explore the impact of the 13th amendment on modern society’s view on criminality.
3. Participants will walk away with a deeper understanding of the interplay between institutionalized racism and policy.
