“Join the Seattle Latino Film Festival in collaboration with El Centro de la Raza in this special screening of the film, Singing our Way to Freedom.

About the movie: Singing Our Way to Freedom (length 88 minutes) is a multilayered look at the life of Chicano musician, composer and community activist, Ramon ‘Chunky’ Sanchez. The film chronicles Chunky’s life from his humble beginnings as a farmworker in Blythe, California to the dramatic moment when he received one of his nation’s highest musical honors at the Library of Congress in Washington DC in 2013. As a young man in the 1960s, Chunky joined the picket lines in the California fields with Cesar Chavez … ” Director Paul Espinoza will be in attendance for a Q&A after the film.

Conversation: Educational Racism & Our Children

“This 2 hour, interactive, Conversation will focus and address racism experienced by children as students in an academic setting as well as [a] communal one. The conversation will touch upon race, melanated students, cultural competency and cultures in the curriculum.

If you are expecting a formal and structured training workshop with handouts, powerpoint slides (exceeding 10 slides) lecturing – this is not that type of venue! This is a workshop that uses the unconventional 21st century tool of ‘Conversation.’ Through conversation, guided by Allie, a Social Change Entrepreneur, and known as “Allie the Conversation Starter, ” participants will be challenged to be honestly raw on classroom expectations, controversial issues and certain racial issues that either they encountered (or have faced) in the classroom, as well as out of it – as teachers, parents and/or as students.” Free admittance for youth 17 & under; youth encouraged to attend.

APSP 7th Congress Viewing Party Seattle

“The King County Prosecutor is a gatekeeper to justice in our region. Whomever holds this position controls key policies for undoing the school to prison pipeline, ending mass incarceration and racial disproportionality, and police accountability. In the past few years there has been a movement for “progressive’ prosecutors to run for office. In some cities this has been a strategy for reform.

While the current King County Prosecutor (incumbent) no longer has an active challenger, he should still be out in our communities connecting with and hearing from constituents; especially those most marginalized and negatively impacted by the criminal legal system.
