“How better to welcome the period of my life that I call fiscal responsibility… than with one grandiose act of fiscal irresponsibility. I’ve always been surrounded by incredible performers and during this one-night only show, I will be your Willy Wonka-style tour guide as we meander through the raw talent, idiocy, dedication, humor, and genius of some of my favorite people. Think of a low budget $NL with a bit more music.
“I’ll be your host, opening the show with some stand up/closing it with some ukulele. In between, you can expect a medley of acts that span genres and formats. Should be one hell of fun way to spend a Friday. Oh, and all ticket sales will be donated to Mary’s Place.”

Children’s Film Festival Seattle – The Adventures of Prince Achmed
“Co-presented with Goethe Pop Up Seattle!
“The oldest existing animated feature, The Adventures of Prince Achmed was made by 23-year-old teacher Lotte Reiniger using the stop-motion and silhouette animation techniques she perfected. Taken from The Arabian Nights, the film tells the story of a wicked sorcerer who tricks Prince Achmed into mounting a magical flying horse and sends the rider off on a flight to his death. But the prince foils the magician’s plan, and soars headlong into a series of wondrous other adventures.” This event is part of the larger: Children’s Film Festival Seattle.

This Saturday, you and the kiddos can catch two awesome educational music opportunities for children in Violin Discovery Workshop Series (1 of 3) w/ BJ Montoya at the Hillman City Collab—this class is designed for kids 4–8 years—and Meter Music Columbia City Open House at Meter Music School, designed for children 6 mos. to 3 years. The latter is free! But they ask that you register so they know you’re coming. The Violin Discovery Workshop is $75 for the full 3-class series.

Story Time with Laila Taji – These Chicks (هالصيصان)
“These Chicks (هالصيصان) is a beloved nursery rhyme, well-known in the Levant; much like Hey Diddle Diddle in the States. The board book format is ideal for toddlers, the easy-to-read Arabic print is perfect for blossoming Arabic readers and the English transliteration and translation aids non-Arab speakers or not-so confident Arabic readers. The author will play interactive games and sing songs in Arabic, as well as read her book. It will be a great for all ages but geared for 18 month-3 year olds.
“Laila Taji is an American of Palestinian heritage. She has an MPH in public health from the University of Washington and currently lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and two girls. She loved watching her kids blossom into readers but struggled to make that happen in Arabic since most books are complex and written in formal Arabic. She wrote These Chicks to give her kids an early Arabic reading experience and to connect them with their Arabic heritage.”

Malú expresses herself in zines, and the book features this art form heavily. Fukuoka Kenjinkai hosts 2019 Mochitsuki at the ‘J’
“The Fukuoka Kenjinkai will be leading a mochitsuki on Sunday, Jan. 27, from 11am-3pm, right here at the ‘J.’ The event is free and open to the public with a request for a small $5 donation. The event will promote Japanese culture with information on mochitsuki history and traditions; organizers encourage participation regardless of which Kenjinkai or community that one comes from.
