Editor’s note: We’ve updated our format for THIS WEEKEND IN SOUTH SEATTLE (TWISS) and given it a new name! Creating LGBTQ+ & Gender Inclusive Schools: A Human Rights Campaign

 “Issues about gender in our schools are emerging as never before. As government, communities, schools and classrooms work to support the learning of every child, gender diversity (even in Seattle) is an area that is new for many educators. As loving adults, we play an important role in turning around potentially negative situations for LGBTQ+ and non-binary children by helping to foster a school climate that promotes acceptance of diversity and security for all.

“This workshop will look at policy, practice, teaching strategies and curriculum that will help you create a welcoming environment for students of all gender identities. The morning session will focus on developing a framework for creating a gender inclusive school.” Presented by Hilltop Educator Institute, this workshop is FREE for City of Seattle DEEL staff and DEEL’s early learning partners in the Seattle Preschool Program, the SPP Pathway Program, and Step Ahead. (Washington STARS hours available.)

WE ARE STILL HERE Film Screening: 10th Anniv. Duwamish Longhouse

 “We hope you will join us for film, food, and conversation as we celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Duwamish Longhouse with a FREE screening + postfilm discussion of PRINCESS ANGELINE and two short films, WAAŁŠIʔAƛIN (COMING HOME), and RECLAMATION: The Rise at Standing Rock. These films tell indigenous stories: past and future.

“The Duwamish people have been in the Seattle/Greater King County area since time immemorial. Their stories, such as ‘North Wind, South Wind,’ tell of the last Ice Age, and an Ice Weir breaking over the Duwamish River. Their longhouse today stands across the street from where one of their largest villages was located before it was burned down by settlers in 1895. Today, the longhouse is a space where the Duwamish people can revitalize their culture, preserve living heritage, and share their stories with the community.

“We hope you will join us as we celebrate the anniversary of the creation of this space with an evening of fantastic films.”
