“This program is one of a series of events at NAAM commemorating Juneteenth, the holiday acknowledging the final abolition of slavery during the U.S. Civil War era. (Learn more at http://www.naamnw.org).
“This powerful film envisions the book James Baldwin never finished, a radical narration about race in America, using the writer’s original words, as read by actor Samuel L. Jackson. Alongside a flood of rich archival material, the film draws upon Baldwin’s notes on the lives and assassinations of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr. to explore and bring a fresh and radical perspective to the current racial narrative in America.

Black Music History Month Celebration 2019
“June is Black Music History Month, and a perfect time to celebrate and honor World re-known Jazz music legend Joe Brazil. Originally from Detroit, Michigan aka The Motor City, Brazil made his mark in the jazz music world, and also within the city he adopted as home, in 1962 Seattle, Washington.
“Brazil’s music legacy includes recording with legends the likes of John Coltrane, and Roy Ayers. Friends of Miles Davis, Dizzy Gilespe, and McCoy Tyner, the range of influence Mr. Brazil has expanded the Globe.
“Brazil was a beloved Seattle music fixture. He along with Jabo Ward, Floyd Standifer, Chuck Metcalf, Frank Gant, and other local music leaders, were the teachers for the next generation of skilled musicians. Brazil was the first African American hired at the University of Washington where he would teach for several years, yet was denied tenure in 1976. His departure from the UW however, made room for more focus on grooming up and coming musicians via the Black Academy of Music.”

“Seattle’s Central District was the largest enclave of African Americans in the Pacific Northwest. The once-thriving community now finds its very existence threatened by change, which is tearing apart the social fabric of their neighborhood. With few African Americans left in the Central District, can they overcome the course of change before their community and its rich history vanish? On the Brink tells a universal story of a struggle to hold on to a sense of community in the face of change, and finding hope in a time of despair.”

“All tenants have the right to affordable and decent housing. And we know that language barriers present challenges in accessing and keeping housing. This is why API Chaya and the Tenants Union have decided to team up to support community in knowing their rights, and also coming together to advocate for more access for communities that speak languages beyond English. Please join us for an evening of learning about our rights as renters, sharing barriers, challenges, and also creative community solutions to making housing access language accessible and to helping shape an emerging campaign to further raise awareness of what it takes to treat language access as a human right.”

The Mixer: Surviving & Thriving in the Creative Gig Economy
“Join us at Clock-Out Lounge on 6/26 for our second in a series of community discussions to help shape the City’s vision for the future of our creative economy.
“Seattle’s creative workers earned over $6 billion dollars in 2017, and creative jobs in Seattle are growing at a faster rate than in the rest of the country*. On a national level, the ‘gig economy’ is on the rise—allowing flexibility and freedom for creative types, but with less of a safety net. At this month’s Mixer, Amy Lillard of Washington Filmworks will lead a discussion with panelists from different creative fields who will share their secrets of success about freelancing, entrepreneurship, and what it takes to make it professionally in Seattle’s growing creative economy.
Afterwards, attendees will break out into small groups for more networking and to give feedback about how the city can help creatives find the resources they need to not only survive, but thrive in our rapidly growing city.
This event is free and open to the public. All ages are welcome. Refreshments will be provided, and alcohol is available for purchase for guests 21+.”
