What the Funk?! Fest 2019
“Seattle is going to be extra funky this August as we bring the first Pacific Northwest all people of color burlesque festival to Queer/Bar Seattle and Columbia City Theater! August 22-24th! Three nights of the funk, the whole funk, and nothing but the funk!
“Night One takes place at Queer/Bar Seattle with our guest of honor and emcee the boss of burlesque, Foxy Tann from Minneapolis! Featuring the 12 burlesque performers from the Pacific Northwest tearing the roof off the mothersucka! Ticket link for night one is here. Nights Two and Three take place at the historic Columbia City Theater! Featuring over 12 performers each night including our headliners: Egypt Blaque Knyle (California), Tre da Marc (Minneapolis). Nox Falls (Seattle), The Luminous Pariah (Seattle) and our PNW featured performers: Ms. Briq House (Seattle), spICE! (Seattle), The Shanghai Pearl (Seattle), Isaiah Esquire (Portland).

Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse at Skyway Outdoor Cinema
“THWIP on over and celebrate the SOC Season 17 finale with the multidimensional masterpiece, Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse!
FOOD: Food Trucks TBA; 50¢ popcorn & $1 full-size candy at concessions
“‘Teen Miles Morales becomes Spider-Man of his reality, crossing his path with five counterparts from other dimensions to stop a threat for all realities.’” (Rated PG)
“Preshow fun gets started at 8pm behind the Skyway 7-Eleven in the U.S. Bank parking lot (but insiders know to get here by 7pm for a good spot). Don’t forget to bring a comfy chair or blanket (or picnic table, or beanbag) and some cash for the concession stand (there is a U.S. Bank ATM on premises and a CO-OP ATM in the 7-Eleven, if you prefer). Movie starts at 9pm with a Blu-ray DVD prize drawing to follow.”

Celebrating Aretha Franklin // Thadillac
“The Royal Room, The Royal Esquire Club, and the South Hudson Music Project present: Seattle musicians play the entire 1967 album, I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You. Widely considered to be a masterpiece from start to finish, Aretha Franklin’s Atlantic label debut, I Never Loved a Man The Way I Love You, includes may well-known songs such as Respect, Drown in My Own Tears, A Change is Gonna Come, and Dr. Feelgood. In addition to covering this soul landmark, the evening will include a second set of classic favorites from the vast repertoire Ms. Franklin left behind.

In a dive on the wharf in San Diego, a makeshift community laughs, drinks, dances, fights, and cares for one another in Small Craft Warnings, Tennessee Williams’ raucous and searching meditation on the lengths to which we will go to find human connection.
The Time of Your Life by William Saroyan — How should you spend the time you’re given? A cast of eight will bring to life 27 indelible characters as they stumble in and out of Nick’s Waterfront Saloon, a spot trying to hold onto its soul in a city being rapidly transformed by economics and anxiety, and grapple with this unanswerable question. Full of music, humor, poetry, and politics, The Time of Your Life calls on us to enjoy our city and each other while we have the chance.” This event repeats with early and late shows Sat. and Sun.!

Carla Rachel Sameth – One Day On The Gold Line
“Through meditations on race, culture, and family, One Day on the Gold Line tells the story of a lesbian Jewish single mother raising a black son in Los Angeles. A memoir-in-essays, it examines life’s surprising changes that come through choice or circumstance, often seemingly out of nowhere, and sometimes darkly humorous—even as the situations are dire. While escaping from a burning boat, Carla realizes that if she died, her one regret would be not having children. She overcomes miscarriages to finally give birth to a son. Motherhood’s usual struggles are then complicated by identity, community, and the challenges of creating a blended family. The overarching theme of these loosely woven reflective tales is the storyteller’s dream of the “perfect” family, the pursuit of which hurls her from one crisis to the next, ultimately meeting its greatest challenge in the form of her teenage son’s struggle with drug addiction.
“Writer. Teacher. Mother. As a writer, Carla hopes to help readers feel less alone and more resilient. As a teacher, she strives to help others tell their stories and hone their craft while experimenting with new forms. The journey of motherhood informs much of her writing. Carla teaches creative writing at the Los Angeles Writing Project (LAWP) at California State University Los Angeles (CSULA) and with Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU).”

“Join us at Northwest African American Museum on 8/28 for the fourth and final in a series of community discussions to help shape the City’s vision for the future of our creative economy. This month’s topic is Advancing Equity in the Arts – Real Talk!
“Lived experience and recent research confirms that people of color in Seattle’s arts and creative ecosystem do not have adequate resources or opportunities to participate in the creative economy equitably and on their own terms. Creatives of color face structural barriers to accessing career opportunities and resources, and are underrepresented in arts leadership and in the creative workforce overall. This needs to change. What can we – the City, the creative community, each of us individually – do to mitigate racial disparities in the creative economy?
“Our guest speakers will discuss issues of access and representation, leadership, and organizational culture. After the speaker portion, attendees will break out into small groups for networking and to give feedback about how the city can grow, support, and retain creatives while minimizing disparities and inequity.” All-Ages
