Sankofa Film Society presents ARRAY’s “Burning Cane”

“Directed by the youngest director to ever have a film in competition at Tribeca Film Festival, BURNING CANE tells the story of a deeply religious woman’s struggle to reconcile her convictions of faith with the love she has for her alcoholic son and a troubled preacher. Set in rural Louisiana, the film explores the relationships within a southern black protestant community, examining the roots of toxic masculinity, how manhood is defined and the dichotomous role of religion within the black community.

“Director Phillip Youmans is an NYU film student and the first African American director to win Tribeca’s Founders Award for Best Narrative Feature. BURNING CANE also won Best Actor for Wendell Pierce (CLEMENCY, SELMA) and Best Cinematography for Youmans.” Presented by the Sankofa Film Society.

“Boo! Did you know Halloween is right around the corner! Do you have your costume for Rainbow Bingo Freaky Friday yet? There’s still time for that. Candidate Showdown in Africatown Voter Forum

“The Young Voters League and the Central Area Collaborative presents the Showdown in Africatown Voter Forum 2019. This forum will have candidates responding to questions about issues that affect residents within their respective districts versus a direct debate between candidates. Each event supporting organization will be asked to submit a question. Africatown and Central Area Collaborative will vet the questions creating the final questions that will be used at the Forum.

“Seattle City Council District # 2: Tammy Morales – Candidate and Mark Solomon – Candidate; Seattle City Council District # 3: Kshama Sawant – Incumbent and Egan Orin – Candidate.

“Moderators: We will have two experienced moderators. The moderators will work together around the various questions submitted by community members and follow-up questions to gain a better understanding of the candidates vision for their district’s constituents.

“Some food will be provided by caterers, but we know our community can get down, so we are encouraging attendees to bring a dish to add to the catered food. Food Vendors: Food Art, Follow Me Catering, Walter’s Soul, and Lil’ Red’s.”

South End Stories – CAC Annual Fundraiser

“CAC is a South End incubator for generative collaboration at the intersection of art, culture, and development.

“COMMUNITY
Join us on Friday, October 25th for South End Stories, a benefit for Community Arts Create in Hillman City. This year’s theme centers the stories and heritage of Seattle’s Southend- our home, rich with culture, language, food, art, and legacy.

“Taste food from some of Seattle’s most innovative and tasty chefs. Kristi Brown (That Brown Girl Cooks!), Marlon Brown (Bessie’s Cakes) and Tarik Abdullah (Chef Tarik). Listen to music from students in the Rhapsody project and testimonials from folks involved in our programming. Hear stories from local artists and organizers from the South End. We’ll have a silent auction! AND we’ll have DJ Onesie!

This fundraiser event is benefitting Community Arts Create as we enter our 9th year. By providing support for dedicated staffing and resource development, your participation will help grow the reach and impact of our programs- which up to this point have been fueled almost exclusively by volunteer labor. The tremendous success of these programs despite limited resources- which include efforts such as Taste International, Rhapsody, Mural Project, Backstreet Bazaar, and the South End Heritage Festival – shows dedication, demand, and potential. Your contributions will help ensure that community members are equitably valued and compensated for their cultural labor which is fundamental in building sustainable capacity from the ground up.

Community Arts Create is a South Seattle organization that uses the storytelling power of the arts to create space for folks to engage. CID Is Home: Community Speak Out!

“What makes the Chinatown-International District home? What are the places that make this community unique — and how do we protect them as gentrification takes its toll in Seattle and in Chinatowns across the country? As for-profit development drives up rents and threatens to displace longtime residents and small businesses, it’s vital that we preserve the CID as a place where immigrants, workers, and people of color can thrive for generations to come.

“Join the CID Coalition to speak out about your vision for our community, and learn how to get involved in the fight to stop displacement in the CID. Food will be provided, and interpretation is available. This project is made possible with support from the Seattle Public Library Foundation through the Library’s COPE program.
