The New Filipina: Cultural Show
“GABRIELA Seattle presents Diwang Pinay: The New Filipina, a cultural showcase celebrating the triumphs and struggles of Filipinas/Filipinx through art, movement, music, theater and stories. This year’s event is in honor of activist and guerrilla fighter Lorena Barros, whose strength, courage and sacrifice give inspiration to the possibilities of a new Filipina.
“Diwang Pinay (Spirit of the Filipina) has been showcased across the country for the past 16 years through various collaborations of Filipina/Filipinx performers, writers, artists, activists and community members. Diwang Pinay serves as one of very few venues solely dedicated to providing Filipinas/Filipinx in Seattle and beyond a platform to share stories, unite in our struggles and engage with the community.

Stories and Love Songs from the South Vietnamese Veteran Perspectives
“Learn more about how South Vietnamese immigrants remember the Vietnam War through stories and love songs. About this Event: 1 pm – Door opens, 2 pm – Conversation with Dr. Julie Pham, Quoc Bao Pham, and Professor Quyen Di., 230 pm – Selections of songs reflecting on the war sang by Melanie Nga My, 330 pm Reception with light appetizers.
“Dr. Julie Pham is the author of Their War: The Perspectives of the South Vietnamese Military in the Words of Veteran-Emigres. Quoc Bao Pham edits the literature section of Nguoi Viet Daily, the largest overseas Vietnamese-language newspaper, and the former editor-in-chief. Professor Quyen Di teaches at UCLA. Melanie Nga My is a popular Vietnamese singer with ASIA Entertainment.”

Mon., Nov. 11:
The Royal Room Collective Music Ensemble
“The Royal Room Collective Music Ensemble is a 12-15 piece band featuring Seattle’s finest and most innovative improvisers under the direction of composer Wayne Horvitz. The RRCME performs Mr. Horvitz’s compositions in a loosely constructed format which uses a combination of on-the-spot (re)arranging and various other techniques, some of which have come to be known as “conduction”. Wayne Horvitz first performed in Butch Morris’s Conduction Ensemble in 1987 at The New School for Social Research in New York City. Twenty four years later, in the summer of 2011, Horvitz began to experiment with his own approach to Conduction while co-leading an experimental big band with composer John Hollenbeck at Cornish College of the Arts. Horvitz added to Morris’ original Conduction symbols, a series of numbers which correlated to specific motifs derived from the compositions. Upon the opening of The Royal Room, Horvitz took the opportunity to form his own big band to perform his compositions utilizing this approach.” The Royal Room is all ages until 10 p.m.
