THIS WEEKEND IN SOUTH SEATTLE—Frederick Douglass Now, 3 Queens, Lazy Daisy Market, and more!

by Emerald Staff

Friday, Feb. 8th:

Roger Guenveur Smith—Frederick Douglass Now

“FREDERICK DOUGLASS NOW is a one-man show inspired by the life and work of the self -liberated abolitionist and pioneering feminist Frederick Douglass. ROGER GUENVEUR SMITH has edited Douglass’ classic 19th century texts into a jazz-infused narrative, bookended by original writing of Beckettian force to produce the kind of edgy, stylistic mash-up of which vital contemporary theater is made.

“Inspired by Hal Holbrook’s Mark Twain Tonight, Smith has been interpreting Douglass materials since he was an undergraduate at Occidental College, subsequently serving as graduate research assistant at Yale University’s Frederick Douglass Papers. He has since taught at both institutions, as well as Cal Arts, where he currently directs his Performing History Workshop.”

This show runs three times this weekend with a matinee on Sunday.

Time: 7:30 PM
Where: Langston Hughes PAI — 104 17th Ave S.

by Emerald Staff

Friday, Jan. 25th:

Vivian Leva & Riley Calcagno w/ Tomo Nakayama

“VIVIAN LEVA & RILEY CALCAGNO
Vivian Leva and Riley Calcagno are tapping into the deepest parts of American music, taking old songs that have seldom been heard and presenting them next to their own timeless and visceral originals. When they are not performing as duo, they’re often found sitting knee to knee, playing under the canopy of trees at fiddle festivals across the country. ‘Time is Everything.’

TOMO NAKAYAMA
Named “Best Folk Act 2017   by Seattle Weekly, Tomo Nakayama has consistently created music that is complex, nuanced, and emotionally compelling. His decade of work both as a solo artist and as frontman in his chamber-pop band Grand Hallway has been praised by NPR, New York Times, and KEXP. Known for his crystalline high-tenor voice, intricate fingerpicking, cinematic production style, and simple, poetic lyrics imbued with warmth and humanity, Tomo’s songs have drawn comparisons to Paul Simon, Elliott Smith, and Jeff Buckley. ‘Pieces of Sky.’”

Friday, Jan. 11th:

B by Guillermo Calderón

“Washington Ensemble Theatre presents the North American Premiere of B, By Guillermo Calderón; Translated by William Gregory; Directed by Jay O’Leary

“Anarchists Alejandra and Marcela are searching for a way to voice their political beliefs and prove their dedication to the cause. When they meet disillusioned bomb maker Jose, he agrees to teach them all he knows. With their motives and devotion for non-violent anti-capitalist anarchy put to the test, Alejandra and Marcela must decide how far the are willing to go and what they are willing to give up to speak their minds. Guillermo Calderón’s tightly-wound surrealist play hashes out the complicated and irrational nature of violence, terrorism, and activism.

“CAST: Sophie Franco* as Alejandra, Craig Peterson as Jose Miguel, Shermona Mitchell as Carmen, Klarissa Marie Robles as Marcela. *Member of Washington Ensemble Theatre.” Editor’s note: Opening night (Fri.!) is SOLD OUT. But there are many upcoming show dates.
