PHOTOS: Rainier Beach Track Team Celebrates Championship Wins

The Rainier Beach Track Club had a good summer season, sending 22 to athletes to the 2019 USATF Hershey National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships in Sacramento, California, in July. The team, coaches, families, and friends celebrated August 14 at Rainier Beach Community Center. Ten of the athletes had all American performances receiving medals in the 800, 100, race walking, shot put, and javelin.

PHOTOS: Dancing and Popcorn at the Othello Park International Festival

Ilyas Abdis jumped up and down excitedly, as he waited in line for hot, fresh popcorn.

“Popcorn! Popcorn!” he exclaimed, pointing at the stall.

Beside him, his younger brother Idrees gazed hungrily at the puffy, yellow clouds falling from the popping pot inside the machine. The pair were two of thousands of children who, along with their families, trooped through Othello Park on Aug. 11 for the annual Othello Park International Festival.

Emma Klein stood in a line of people locked together at the wrists outside of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) headquarters on the 29th floor of a building in Downtown Seattle Aug. 8. She was one of 10 people blocking two entrances into the office to disrupt business for ICE to protest the escalating actions against people seeking asylum and undocumented immigrants in the United States.

PHOTOS: Umoja Fest is the Soul of Seafair and a Celebration of Seattle’s Black Community

Thousands of people attended the annual Umoja Fest at Judkins Park Aug. 2–4. This year’s event was better than ever featuring the annual AfricanTown Heritage Parade, a youth football scrimmage, the Heal the Hood Basketball Tournament, more than 100 vendors, live music, delicious food, culture, and fashion.

Students From 17 High Schools, 18 Middle Schools Celebrate at Black Graduation

On Sunday June 30, 17 high school and 18 middle school graduates and their families from all over the greater Seattle area celebrated their educational achievements at the 4th Annual Black Graduation for Middle School and High School students at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute.

Dragon Fest Welcomes Crowds for Performance, Noodle-Eating Contest

Noodles still spilling out of his mouth, Brandon T. raised his chopsticks in victory. Before anyone had realized it, he had demolished an entire takeaway container of noodles during the youth portion of the noodle-eating contest at this year’s Dragon Fest, hosted by the Chinatown-International Business District Improvement Area.

Kids Take Home the Win at Chess Competition Against Seattle Police

The 3rd Annual Chess Rumble between Detective Cookie’s Urban Youth Chess Club and Seattle Police Department officers went down on June 18th at Van Asselt Elementary School. Just like the previous two shess battles the kids crushed the competition. The kids won 30 games and the cops won 9.
