In the wake of recent police murders and violence, I have no 5-step guide to offer; no instruction manual for white folks who want to help. For the 48 hours after a publicized police shooting, we are always so desperate for ways to help; to ease our white guilt or sometimes genuinely offer condolences to people of color.  It’s clear that condolences aren’t what’s needed. Employees Describe Slipping Into Homelessness While Working at REI

REI is known as a place of good-heartedness and quality, so it might come as a shock to hear that many of its employees are either on food stamps, working multiple jobs, or both.

When it comes down to it, REI may have bucked their principles as a co-op for a large corporate trend: Expansion at the expense of its workers. This came to light at a public forum for REI workplace rights yesterday evening, hosted by Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant. The June 23 Brexit vote, when interpreted in conjunction with other global phenomena, was a revelatory event.  The vote to leave the EU was supported in every region of England, except for London, revealing a powerful demographic divide between the more urban, white collar, younger, educated, affluent, pro-immigration, and pro-globalization elite; and the more rural, blue collar, older, less educated, less affluent, anti-immigrant, anti-globalization constituency.
