OPINION | The Legislative Session Is Over. Here’s How Washington Lawmakers Strengthened Abortion Rights

by Megan Burbank

The reversal of Roe v. Wade last summer catalyzed major electoral wins for Democrats nationwide and brought a slate of bills protecting abortion access to the Washington State Legislature. But at the time, it wasn’t clear the momentum would last — or translate to meaningful, sustainable change. Now that this year’s legislative session has wrapped, with Gov. Jay Inslee signing off on a slate of new protections for reproductive health, we have a better idea of what’s in store. Here are the policies that made it to the governor’s desk and what they mean for the future of abortion rights and gender-affirming care in the Northwest.

2022 Retrospective | Mike Davis

by Mike Davis

The Emerald will be observing a team-wide wellness pause from Dec. 15 to Jan. 2, and most publishing will be on hiatus, with the exceptions of four pieces, of which this is one, wherein editors look back at 2022 and some of the work that made the Emerald shine.

I joined the Emerald in the summer of 2020. With everything in the world falling apart as we collectively experienced the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the racial awakening in the wake of the murder of George Floyd, and having all of our lives abruptly halted as we transitioned into the work-from-home era — I wanted to use my voice to support my community.

My first article covered a Juneteenth Black Wealth marketplace, where people could join a virtual “market” and buy products from Black businesses. From there, my coveraged evolved to articles exploring my reaction to police violence, the complexities of community healing, and local politics.
I became Voices editor at the Emerald in May 2022. In this role, I have had the opportunity to amplify the opinions of community members and invite them to speak on topics that impact our lives. With the Emerald being one of the few publications in Seattle that still has an op-ed section, this role comes with great responsibility. It has been an honor to engage with so many people who have had so much to say about our society and while I am only highlighting three pieces here today, there have been so many powerful articles in this section, and I appreciate everyone who has contributed or read articles in this section.

If you appreciate the work that the Emerald does, please become a Rainmaker — and help us hit our goal of reaching 1,100 recurring contributors who help sustain us on a regular basis throughout each year!

OPINION | UW’s Investigation Into DIY Sexual Assault Kits Shows How Companies Benefit From Real Inequities

by Megan Burbank

At the end of October, Attorney General Bob Ferguson sent a cease-and-desist letter to Leda Health, a company marketing DIY test kits to survivors of sexual assault. The cease-and-desist was prompted by a complaint filed by the Associated Students of the University of Washington after the student newspaper, The Daily, found that the test kits, which Leda Health had promoted through a partnership with a UW sorority, weren’t admissible in court.

OPINION | ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Takes On the Northwest’s Abortion Politics

by Megan Burbank

Grey’s Anatomy is one of those TV shows set in a version of Seattle that often feels like it has nothing to do with the real city. There are the obligatory aerial shots of the Sound and the Space Needle in the pilot episode, sure, but it can be hard to suspend disbelief when you know Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital — with its glass walls perpetually rain-streaked, and an endless parade of increasingly baroque tragedies unfolding within them — is really in California. Aside from the Queen Anne exterior location for Meredith Grey’s house, this is a show that mostly takes place in a hospital. It could be set anywhere.

‘Partial Birth Abortion’ Is a Right-Wing Invention

by Megan Burbank

With abortion rights top of mind for Washington voters as we count down to the Nov. 8 general election, some Republican party candidates are using campaign literature to reinforce longstanding myths about abortion. Earlier in October, the State Republican Party distributed mailers claiming Democratic candidates support “partial birth abortion,” abortion “until the due date,” and “no safeguards.”

West Coast Advocates Strategize to Support Abortion Access as Roe Fallout Continues

by Megan Burbank

As states move to ban or limit abortion in the wake of Roe v. Wade’s reversal, western states including Washington are upholding abortion access for the rest of the country. That’s the motivation behind an ambitious package of abortion access policies California’s state legislature passed in August, including expedited licensure for abortion providers, a California Reproductive Health Service Corps aimed at nurturing a diverse pool of reproductive health care workers, and expanded privacy protections for medical records. It’s just one set of policies that represents major efforts among advocates and policymakers in western states to preserve and expand protections once guaranteed under Roe. Three months after Roe was overturned, reproductive health policy advocates from California, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington gathered virtually to discuss the road ahead.

Wade. She made the announcement at a roundtable discussion on abortion rights held at Tacoma’s People’s Community Center, cohosted by Schrier, U.S. Reps. On a national level, Kansas voters gave an unexpected victory for abortion rights last week, which serves as evidence that perhaps U.S. voters are not as in line with the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade as anti-abortion advocates may have thought.

OPINION | Open Letter to the Women Protesting Abortions on Renton Avenue

by Jennifer Lee

Content Warning: This op-ed discusses infant death and suicide.

I spent yesterday in the ICU room of a baby who would never go home. I took professional photos of her as the chaplain stood in the corner and the staff talked to the family about organ donation. This family, who had dreamed of having another baby, calmly stayed with her as she prepared to leave this earth. Next, doctors will talk the family through what the end will be like. I don’t need to hear it. I have been here before.
