Black Heritage Society Partners With MOHAI to Host Black Architects and Community Event

On Saturday, Feb. 11, the Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI) will be partnering with the Black Heritage Society of Washington State (BHS) to host a community event titled Building with Purpose: Black Architects and Community Agency from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m at the MOHAI Microsoft Lakefront Pavilion. The event will feature On the Boards curatorial fellow Berette Macaulay, Revere XR founder Yolanda Barton, Vanishing Seattle founder Cynthia Brothers, architect Laurie Allison Wilson, and museum consultant Jackie Peterson. Rachel Spence is a programs manager at MOHAI and helped organize the event alongside BHS President Stephanie Johnson-Toliver.

“We’re grateful to be in partnership with BHS and feel honored to help facilitate conversations around equitable development and the role of Black architects in creating a livable city,” Spence said. “We hope our audience goes away feeling connected to their built environments, and that they feel inspired to fight for community-driven development.”

MOHAI’s New Exhibit Celebrates PNW Black Architects

Meet the Black architects who designed our skylines.

From Feb. 4 through April 30, 2023, the Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI) will exhibit “From the Ground Up: Black Architects and Designers,” highlighting the historical, as well as contemporary, talent of Black architects across the country, and particularly within the Pacific Northwest. The exhibit was created by the Museum of Science and Industry (MSCI) in Chicago and codeveloped with the Black Heritage Society of Washington State.

New BIPOC Business Weaves Diverse Arts, Culture, History Into Design

“We have often looked around and asked, ‘Where are the Black and Brown people working, and where are the Black and Brown clients?’ Because of this, we have been really intentional that our clientele represents who we are.”

This is more than just a business motto for Sonia Lynn-Abenojar and Sergio Max Legon-Talamoni, the cofounders of La Union Studio, an architecture, interior, and design consultancy. The (newly married) husband and wife team have taken their passion for architecture and design, along with their love for the diverse communities of the Pacific Northwest, to create a business that reflects who they are as individuals and entrepreneurs.

The Seattle Architecture Lobby Hosts Tour of Hostile Architecture in Pioneer Square

The Seattle Design Festival comes downtown every year to celebrate “how design improves the quality of our lives and our community.” This year the Seattle Architecture Lobby will be conducting a Hostile Architecture Tour to explore who has the power to design, who doesn’t, and which communities are affected by design choices. Through a 10-stop tour we will examine design as the result of deliberate processes that serve some and not others. We will also discuss our role as designers with power and complicity in those processes which shape our city.
