Columbia City Gallery smells, unsurprisingly, like oil paint. There’s a slight breeze in the gallery, and it’s quiet except for the air conditioner’s hum. An artist, one of the gallery’s current members, is working a shift in the gift shop and says hello. There’s an ease to being in the space.

Angelina Villalobos, who goes by the moniker “179,” uses art to affect social change. Through drawing and painting, she explores her past and Latinx identity, dissecting elements of a traditional Mexican-Catholic education. She is consciously unlearning aspects of it, such as gender norms — issues, she said, “would do me harm and will ultimately hold me back.”

Artists Ari Glass and Craig Cundiff have collaborated on a new mural near the Mt. Baker light rail station, and it’s a beauty. Covering the southern and western walls of Cash America Pawn at 2825 Rainier Ave. S., the artwork spans approximately 4,000 square feet and took about a month to paint.

Hundreds of people filled the Franklin High School commons on Nov. 9 to await the official unveiling of the Franklin High School Art of Resistance and Resilience Club’s 40-foot mural commemorating the Seattle Chapter of the Black Panther’s 50th Anniversary. Members of the Art of Resistance & Resilience, a social and environmental justice-oriented art club at Franklin, have been working on the mural since January and were able to display a portion of it at the SCBP 50th Anniversary Celebration in April.

For his new show, “Contour,” Seattle artist Jake Millett has made complete works of fractures. His are visions of expansive landscapes broken down into specific, often minuscule sections, split line-by-line and shade-by-shade. Sometimes bursting with bright colors, sometimes cold and chilling like an angular iceberg, Millett’s work, which will show this month at the Capitol Hill gallery, The Factory, through Halloween on specific dates, bends the eye to consider new ways of interpreting vision.
