Somali Chef and Writer Ifrah F. Ahmed Shares Her Culinary Tradition Through Pop-Ups

Somali chef and writer Ifrah F. Ahmed grew up cooking with her mother, knowing the recipes like the back of her hand. Cooking became her first love, and she continued doing it well into her adult years. As she went on, the memories of cooking alongside her mother, sharing recipes, and learning more about her Somali culture became incredibly important to her, thus the beginning of her traveling pop-up MILK & MYRRH was born. The name MILK & MYRRH was inspired by a vintage Somali cookbook Ahmed found that contained the names that Somalia was once called, which included “The Land of Milk and Myrrh.” Rooted in her Somaliness, the name called out to her and became not just an ode to her motherland but to her upbringing and all the memories she had of sharing her love for her Somali culinary tradition with the ones around her.

In 1980, the Ethiopian Community in Seattle (ECS) was formed to create a community of support for immigrants in the local area. Language and cultural differences create barriers for new community members seeking to access services, and the ECS has made it a priority to provide job, housing, health care, and legal assistance to those seeking support. At its core, the ECS has heavily relied on volunteerism within its community of over 5,000 members across King County to continue to help new immigrants coming to the U.S. nearly four decades later.

‘Meet Me at Higo’ Recalls Executive Order 9066 Through Seattle’s Murakami Family

On Feb. 1, “Meet Me at Higo: An Enduring Story of a Japanese American Family, the traveling exhibit from the Wing Luke Museum, opened on Level 8 of The Seattle Public Library’s (SPL) Central Library location. The exhibit tells the story of a Japanese American family in Seattle’s Chinatown-International District before, during, and after World War II, allowing visitors to get a sense of the profound historical roots of the Japanese American community in Seattle.

Affordable Housing and a New Community Space Is Coming to White Center

Itsumono Celebrates Grand Opening in Seattle’s Historic Japantown

On Jan. 24, Itsumono, a Japanese restaurant located in Seattle’s Historic Japantown, celebrated its grand opening. They had been softly opened since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, but finally removed their wooden boards outside and are currently accepting reservations for patrons.

Seattle may be miles away from New Orleans, but at least for the month of February, Seattleites can beat the winter freeze with the extravagance and excess of Mardi Gras celebrations. From jazz concerts to brass band blowouts and Cajun/Creole cuisine options, the Emerald has compiled a list of events and places to celebrate the traditions of this holiday, full of music, dancing, and lavish food, that will bring New Orleans a little closer to the South End this Fat Tuesday.

Honoring Black History Month: Events in the Seattle Area

Black History Month is well underway. The annual celebration conceived by historian Carter G. Woodson began in 1926 as a time to honor Black resistance and raise awareness of Black history.

A wide range of events are happening throughout Seattle, uplifting Black histories, stories, and brilliance. These commemorations include educational events, workshops, art exhibitions, and an entirely new museum organized by Rainier Avenue Radio, showcasing the achievements and celebrating Black historical figures particular to the Pacific Northwest.

Listed below are some events around the Seattle area to honor and learn from the vast history of Black culture, identity, and excellence.
