Seattle-based songwriter, Chava Mirel, composes cocoons that transform both performer and listener. Her latest album, the full-length Into The Light, is a deeply personal offering. It delves into self-doubt, gnarled ideas of love and how to transform oneself through difficulties both mental and physical. The Emerald is excited to debut the lead single from the album, a cover of the iconic grunge song, “Would?” by Alice In Chains.

Crowdsourcing Voices for a New Kind of Community Choir

Joel DeJong, founder of the South End’s Crowdsource Choir, a non-religious and non-commitment-orientated singing group, remembers a night in 2017 on the light rail train. He and his wife were on their way home around midnight after seeing the famed rock group U2 at CenturyLink Field with a crowd of many thousands. But on the train, DeJong noticed, everyone was on their phones, removed from one another. So, like one does, he started singing Bono’s lyrics.

Songwriter Meklit Hadero reconnects with Seattle at the Columbia City Theater Nov. 30

San Francisco-based singer, Meklit Hadero, considers Seattle a second home — or a third home, or maybe a fourth. For the soulful, jazzy singer-songwriter, who was born in Ethiopia and raised in the United States, the Emerald City is a place where she can reconnect with family and with a part of the world in which she lived for more than a year. And Hadero will do just that on Nov. 30 at the Columbia City Theater, when she graces the stage to perform songs from her immaculate and expansive catalogue. To preview the gig, we caught up with the songwriter to ask her about her beginnings as an artist, how she honed her writing style and what she looks to, when the world can seem too much.
