Rainier Beach Action Coalition’s Annual Back2School Bash Is Back in Full Effect

On Saturday, Aug. 27, Rainier Beach Action Coalition (RBAC) will hold their 19th annual Back2School Bash at the Rainier Beach Community Center Plaza from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Led by community organizer and founder of Changing Habits and Motivating Personal Self-Esteem (CHAMPS) Danielle Jackson, the 19th annual event will give out free backpacks full of school supplies and other educational resources to students as they enter the 2022–2023 school year. Food and entertainment will also be provided.

Efforts to Bring a Skate Park to Rainier Beach Pick Back Up

Danielle Jackson has revived a project she dreamed up four years ago after witnessing a kid ride down Renton Avenue on a skateboard in the rain. 

She was bewildered and thought, “There’s gotta be somewhere where our kids can go skate.” That’s when Jackson says she found Seattle’s Citywide Skatepark Plan, which pointed to sites across Seattle ripe for a skate park. The Rainier Beach Playfield was one of them, but for any project to take off, it had to be community-led.

What the South End Wants to Hear from Seattle City Candidates

Even though Danielle Jackson says she is skeptical of the system, she always votes.

“I want my vote to count, but I’m not always happy with the people in place,” she says. 

Jackson is a long-time Rainier Valley resident and founder of the Changing Habits and Motivating Personal Self-Esteem (CHAMPS) organization. Her community organization helps connect Rainier Valley residents with programs and resources such as violence prevention workshops taught by youth for youth. The non-profit partners with groups, businesses, and churches across the valley to help people who may be struggling.

The City of Seattle Has Zoned Rainier Beach Playfield for a Skatepark — Organizers Seeking Community’s Help to Make it Happen

Danielle Jackson, president and founder of Changing Habits and Motivating Personal Self-Esteem (CHAMPS), has been serving South Seattle youth and families through her resource and service center since 1999. The main focus areas of CHAMPS are housing and financial stability, health and safety, and community participation.

One of Jackson’s current projects, which she has been working on for the past few years, is bringing a skatepark to Rainier Beach. The proposed skatepark would be in the field next to Rainier Beach Community Center (RBCC) and would coexist with a baseball field, a play structure, and an open grass field.
