Unemployment Data Shows Unequal Recovery, Galvanizes South End Equity Efforts

Recovery in south King County has not kept up with north King County and preexisting economic disparities between the two regions were exacerbated by the pandemic, a recent Economic Security Department (ESD) report said.

The August ESD report showed evidence of an ongoing economic recovery in King County, including an unemployment rate much lower than in other counties at 4.8%, suggesting that King County’s recovery has been the swiftest in the state. That said, data at the city level shows a different picture.

In January 2020, the highest unemployment rate among Auburn, Kirkland, Redmond, and Renton was 3.4% in Auburn, and the lowest was 2.1% in Redmond.

“While the relative positions of these four communities persisted throughout the pandemic, the gap over time has widened,” said Anneliese Vance-Sherman, regional labor economist for the ESD. “All four communities are worse off today than they were before the pandemic, but it is taking longer for the South End communities to recover.”

Dow Constantine Runs for Reelection as County Executive Pushing COVID Recovery

Dow Constantine, the current King County executive, is running for reelection this year. Constantine is a Seattle native who grew up in West Seattle and attended the University of Washington. He has had a long career in politics, serving as a Washington State representative from the 34th District for two terms, a State senator for one term, and later held a seat on the King County Council for nine years. Constantine has served as the King County executive for 12 years. 

The current executive is running against Joe Nguyen, a member of the Washington State Senate who represents the 34th District, the seat once held by Constantine.. 

This election, Constantine’s main areas of focus are COVID-19 recovery and building strong, equitable communities.

Weekend Long Read: Economic Progress Report

This weekend’s “long read” is the Washington State Economic and Revenue Forecast Council’s report from last week on how the economic recovery is going, both nationally and locally.  In short: “It’s complicated.”

There is no one metric that gives us a perfect read on the economy; it is very much a multifaceted creature. Economists often start by looking at industrial production, employment, and consumer confidence, and the report definitely includes those, but it provides interesting, insightful charts on several other measures as well, including personal income, home prices, oil prices, and inflation.
