The retirement of 13-year incumbent Joe McDermott from the King County Council prompted two local politicians to run for the open seat: Burien Mayor Sofia Aragon and Seattle City Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda. King County District 8 Candidate Sofia Aragon Talks to Real Change

In addition to candidate Sofia Aragon, Real Change also interviewed candidate Teresa Mosqueda.

King County is the largest county in the state of Washington, and its government is responsible for providing key services like public health and bus transportation to more than 2.25 million residents. In most of the county, which overlaps with 39 cities and towns, the King County Council has limited authority. However, for about a quarter million residents of the county’s unincorporated areas, the council has direct control.

Because of this limited reach, the King County Council has historically been a less attractive post for politicians. This year, however, there are multiple contested races.

OPINION | Why I Support Tanya Woo for District 2

by Matt Chan

Ahead of the Aug. 1 primary election, the South Seattle Emerald invited community members to voice their support for the candidates for District 2 of the Seattle City Council race. The opinions, beliefs, and viewpoints expressed below do not necessarily reflect the opinions, beliefs, and viewpoints of the Emerald or official policies of the Emerald.

In addition to candiate Tanya Woo, community members also wrote an op-ed for candidate Tammy Morales.

The reason I’m voting for Tanya Woo is because of one word: empathy.

Empathy is more than compassion; it is the ability to see the world from a different perspective. As the problems in our city continue to grow, we need to act with compassion and create dialogue that brings us together. We don’t need ideologues who think they know what is best for South Seattle. We need people who will show up, listen, and do the hard work to tackle the problems. We deserve that.

Tammy Morales is the progressive leader we need on the City Council. The issues Seattle’s Communities of Color deal with are serious and require real solutions. Tammy governs with transparency, and she values community collaboration when addressing our district’s toughest challenges. We urge you to vote for Tammy on Aug. 1, and here’s why.

Where Do Seattle City Council Candidates Stand on Extreme Weather Sweeps?

by Tobias Coughlin-Bogue

(This article was originally published on Real Change and has been reprinted under an agreement.)

On June 28, the newly formed Services Not Sweeps Coalition (SNSC) announced a campaign to ban wintertime sweeps and sweeps during extreme weather events. Similar protections exist in Seattle for renters at risk of eviction, the coalition’s announcement noted, before going on to argue that those protections should be extended to “our community members who are the most vulnerable.”
