Estelita’s Library Turns the Page on a New Chapter in the Central District

This past Saturday, Nov. 13, was the grand opening of Estelita’s Library’s new location in the Central District (CD). The justice-focused community library opened in 2018 in Beacon Hill, but their brand new space in the CD represents an exciting new chapter for the library and the community. This move has been months in the making.

“We own this space now,” said cofounder Edwin Lindo in an interview with the Emerald. “And that’s a powerful place to be in for the community. To not be displaced.” Lindo previously rented the Beacon Hill location with his cofounder and wife, Dr. Estell Williams.

Estelita’s Library Moves Into a New Central District Location

Estelita’s Library, Beacon Hill’s beloved justice-focused bookstore, library, and community hub, is moving into a brand new building on Martin Luther King Jr. Way South in the Central District. The move is made possible through a pilot project by the City of Seattle Office of Arts and Culture called Tiny Cultural Spaces. The project seeks to transfer unused plots of city-owned land to arts and culture organizations. The move marks a new chapter for Estelita’s, a beacon for activism, learning, and joy in the South End.

‘Black and Center’ Holiday Gift and Giving Guide!

Before the pandemic, my two favorite places to shop for holiday gifts were Kinokuniya Seattle and Pike Place Market. At Kinokuniya, the bright, densely-packed Japanese bookstore in Uwajimaya Village, I browsed children’s books, comics, magazines, and stationery for hours. At Pike Place Market, I beelined to the Herban Farm stand, founded by Ras Levi Peynado, a Seattleite with Jamaican Roots who farms and dries his products. There, I would test-smell the fragrant seasonings, rubs, and salves, while staring at ferry boats crossing Elliott Bay, before buying gifts for family members. Among favorites were Pike Place Herbs (an all purpose seasoning), the paprika-rich Seatown Smoke (“BBQ in a jar”), and the floral Lavender Sea Salt.

Estelita’s Library Holds Teaching Event Imparting Lessons From Black Panther Party’s Newspaper

Pouring from the entrance of the cozy Estelita’s Library in Beacon Hill, people listened to Jerrell Davis, also known artistically as Rell Be Free, perform inside. Out back in the library’s courtyard, others created silkscreen prints with the help of Takiyah Ward, the visual artist behind T-DUB Customs, and Franklin High School students raised money for an art class. PHOTOS: Seattle Celebrates Pride 2019

The big parade takes place every year downtown, but a number of events around the city and particularly the South End highlight the diversity of the month-long celebration. South Seattle Emerald contributors Carolyn Bick and Guy Oron offered up their images of Pride from several events this year. And a group of Seattle Pride parade participants shared their view on war and militarism.
