Ethiopian Community: A Video Portrait of Generational Wealth-Building Through Affordable Housing Development

In 1980, the Ethiopian Community in Seattle (ECS) was formed to create a community of support for immigrants in the local area. Language and cultural differences create barriers for new community members seeking to access services, and the ECS has made it a priority to provide job, housing, health care, and legal assistance to those seeking support. At its core, the ECS has heavily relied on volunteerism within its community of over 5,000 members across King County to continue to help new immigrants coming to the U.S. nearly four decades later.

Ethiopian Community Village Development to Provide Affordable Housing Units in Rainier Beach

The Ethiopian Community in Seattle (ECS) has been developing a 90-unit affordable housing project for seniors in Rainier Beach — the Ethiopian Community Village. Construction began in August of last year.

Case Rates Remain Highest in South King County, Two Vaccination Sites Open

A large wave of COVID-19 cases is expected to arrive in Seattle due to a variant strain of the virus, meanwhile South King County remains the most impacted by the novel coronavirus, county public health officials said in a press conference Friday afternoon. Vaccinations have been distributed at higher rates in north and central King County. In response the county has stepped up efforts to increase the number of vaccination sites for South King County residents in the past week.

City Grant Will Boost Development of Affordable Commercial Space in Planned Africatown Plaza Project

Mayor Jenny Durkan announced this year’s Equitable Development Initiative grants Tuesday including a new wave of funding for Central District organizations.

She also signed legislation finalizing the transfer of city properties to community organizations including the Central Area Senior Center on 30th Avenue South and Fire Station 6 at 23rd Avenue and East Yesler Way.

Africatown Community Land Trust and Byrd Barr Place were key organizations on the day. CHS reported here on Africatown’s plans to transform the unused fire station into a new technology center development as Byrd Barr Place is also taking ownership of the former fire station on 18th Avenue that it calls home. Both organizations also received a new round of EDI grants, according to Tuesday’s announcement.
