Students Chain Selves to UW Power Plant, Calling for Decarbonization by 2035

On Friday, May 19, a coalition of climate justice student activists, local community organizations, and student groups gathered at the University of Washington (UW) campus to call on the university — specifically UW President Ana Mari Cauce and Provost Mark Richards — to make a written commitment to a “95% by 2035” decarbonization goal in the campus’s direct energy portfolio and to use construction as an opportunity to increase campus accessibility. The protest included a march and speeches, and then thunderous chants from the protesters echoed against the humming of the UW’s colossal power plant machine as other protesters began to chain themselves to its perimeter. According to UW Sustainability and UW Facilities articles, 93% of campus emissions derive from the methane gas plant, which produces steam to heat and cool the university’s buildings.

As an expansive and varied medium, film has the ability to challenge, bewilder, and provoke viewers. Yet in contemporary cinema, moviegoers generally have a decent idea of what they are getting into when they enter the theater — incessant online advertisements pique the interest of targeted movie audiences. But what would happen if a viewer experienced a film without any preconceptions? Without even knowing which film would be screened?

White House Economic Summit Dedicated to Aiding Local AA & NHPI Business Owners

Community leaders, local small-business owners, and White House staff members gathered at Seattle City Hall on March 30, 2023, for the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (WHIAANHPI) Economic Summit for communities within Seattle and Washington State.

Youth Lobby Day Highlights Underlying Issues Around Gun Violence

Inside the heart of the Washington State Capitol building in Olympia, a sea of students in bright-orange shirts filled the Columbia Room. These students, representing different schools from all over Seattle, were getting ready to walk over to the steps of the Capitol to demand one thing: the end of gun violence in their communities.
