BOOOOO!

Did I scare ya? It’s that time of year when every glimpse of the moon, every branch scratching against a window, and every bump in the night takes on an unnerving implication. Halloween is bearing down on us and there’s no shortage of ghostly celebrations going down in the South End.

No Tricks, All Treats: Community Organizations Are Bringing Something Sweet to South Seattle This Halloween

by Dominique Morales

(This article was originally published on Real Change and has been reprinted under an agreement.)

Trick-or-treating has become an almost guaranteed promise of candy on Halloween. With history dating back to the 16th century, this tradition has taken many forms throughout the years, with modern iterations usually entailing the sound of door knocks and the sight of costumed children. But for some communities in South Seattle, Halloween festivities have taken on a much different form from the door-to-door candy hopping.

13 Films and TV Shows to Do Your Spooky Season Right

by Neve Mazique

Horror is my favorite entertainment genre, and I enjoy its grotesque fruits all year round with romantic madness. It is especially satisfying to me to watch horror during Halloween, All Hallows’ Eve, Samhain, Día de Muertos, and the autumn season. As a practicing vodouisant, hoodoo witch, and rainbow goth, I celebrate the thinning of the veil at the fall equinox and continue my dark revelry until December. My love of the macabre feels spiritual, political, and deeply fun.

T’Challaween 2022: The Emerald’s Halloween Event Drew More Superheroes Than Ever

by Susan Fried

Dozens of little superheroes, astronauts, princesses, ghosts, witches, and every other imaginable creature — and their parents — descended on Beacon Hill near Jefferson Park on Oct. 29 for the third annual T’Challaween — A South End Tribute to Our Heroes. The mile-long trick-or-treat event started at 18th and College and ended at Jefferson Park with numerous treat stops along the way. The South End Public Market’s “Moon Market” at Jefferson Park ended the celebration. In addition to the tent stops where volunteers handed out candy, several neighbors had created ingenious candy chutes and a swinging skeleton that distributed sweets to those brave enough to approach it.

Just in time for Halloween, we have a scary pick for you, and this one is definitely for mature audiences only. I watched Fresh (2022) for the first time alone while drawing. I remember being most drawn in by the music and dance montages, which lend Mimi Cave’s film a smart and out-of-time flair. Anytime there is dancing in a horror, it’s going to get my attention.

Photo Essay: T’Challaween, Some Much-Needed South End Sunshine and Sweetness

by Emerald Staff

This Halloween, the South End changed things up — though it’s probably more fair to say that a really weird year did that for us and we just got creative with the tools we had at our disposal. T’Challaween was something else! We had a blast putting it on. We hope everyone enjoyed the day as much as we did!

We, the South Seattle Emerald, our exclusive broadcast partner, Rainier Avenue Radio, a stellar list of sponsors (which we’ll get to in a minute), and a dedicated group of volunteers laid the groundwork for the festivities — and the South Seattle community brought the party! (We knew you would, but we were overwhelmed by the turn out. Literally — we ran out of candy!)
