Dead Fish Appearing on Lake Washington Shorelines Due to Bacteria and Warmer Water

The Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife (WDFW) has received numerous reports of dead fish washing up on the shores of Lake Washington. According to WDFW King County District fisheries biologist Aaron Bosworth, the dead fish that are appearing are mostly yellow perch, with a few sticklebacks in the mix as well. He conducted a survey earlier this month at the Kirkland shoreline, and counted about 100 yellow perch scattered alongside the area. Yellow perch are an extremely common fish in Lake Washington, and they can also be found in other lakes across the state.

SDOT Plans to Close Lake Washington Boulevard to Cars on Weekends Through September

Beginning on the Fourth of July weekend, the 3-mile section of Lake Washington Boulevard between Mount Baker Park and Seward Park will be closed to vehicles every weekend of the summer.

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) announced the road closures on Thursday, June 24, as part of its Stay Healthy Streets initiative.

The barricades that will signal the section closed-off to cars will be installed Friday afternoons and will be removed Monday mornings, except for Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends, when the barricades will be removed on the Tuesday morning after the holiday weekend. People driving to homes along the boulevard because they live there, are visiting, or making deliveries are allowed.

“This summer’s approach […] expands the lakefront for more use, and supports affordable travel options by making it easier to walk, bike, and roll,” SDOT said in its announcement. “It provides space for children under 12 that are not currently eligible for vaccinations to stay active. It’s consistent to help people planning their trips and it maintains vehicle access during typical commute hours.”

Photo Essay: Finding Refuge From the Heat

Even jumping in Lake Washington isn’t going to be enough to stay cool in what weather reports are calling historic triple-digit temperatures that have hit Seattle this weekend and will continue through next week. Lake Washington and other local lakes will be overflowing with people seeking relief from the scorching heat.

As a result of the National Weather Service forecasting excessive heat from Friday June 25 through Tuesday June 29, the City of Seattle is opening more than 30 “cooling centers” around the city, including libraries, community centers and emergency shelters. The City is also partnering with several malls and movie theaters to offer promotions to people who stop by to cool off. No purchase required — everyone is invited to take advantage of the air conditioning in local malls. In addition to the cooling centers, people can seek relief at local pools, spray parks, and wading pools.
