Eviction Deadline: Tukwila Refugees March on Seattle City Hall Seeking Help

On the day they are expected to move out of their rooms at the Quality Inn in Kent, the Venezuelan refugees formerly living on the grounds of the Riverton Park United Methodist Church (RPUMC) gathered at Seattle City Hall on Tuesday, Jan. 30, to put forth their requests for assistance to the City Council.

“We need help because today we’ve been told we need to leave the hotel,” said Maria Coronel, one of the refugees staying at the Quality Inn, through an interpreter. “We just want to ask for help with decent housing and work. We don’t want to be a burden to you, but we have a right to have decent housing and help.”

90 Venezuelan Families Seeking Asylum to Be Displaced From Quality Inn in Kent

Ninety Venezuelan families, part of the community of refugees who formerly lived in tents on the grounds of the Riverton Park United Methodist Church, must vacate their hotel rooms at Kent’s Quality Inn by Tuesday, Jan. 30. The group of families, comprising about 170 individuals, were picked up from the church by the local nonprofit Save the Kids and placed in hotel rooms during the drop in temperature a few weeks ago.

The Office of Police Accountability (OPA) said this week that “callous remarks … disparaging remarks” made by a Seattle Police Officers Guild (SPOG) vice president regarding the death of 23-year-old Jaahnavi Kandula violated Seattle Police Department’s (SPD) professionalism and bias-based policing policies.

Meet the District 2 Seattle City Council Candidates: Tanya Woo

To help our readers make more informed voting decisions ahead of the Nov. 7 general election, the South Seattle Emerald interviewed both candidates for District 2 of the Seattle City Council Race. Each candidate’s Q&A portion presents their perspectives in their own words.

In addition to candidate Tanya Woo, the Emerald interviewed candidate Tammy Morales. On Thursday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. the Emerald will also host a debate between the two candidates at the Rainier Arts Center. The debate is free, open to the public, and will be livestreamed on the Emerald’s Facebook page.

Black & Tan Hall Hosts First Public Event: Dyme Design’s 8th Anniversary Party

A brand new chapter for Hillman City’s historic space celebrates arts, music, and culture by Communities of Color.

On Saturday, Sept. 23, Hillman City’s Black & Tan Hall (B&TH) hosted its first public event with the celebration of the eighth anniversary of Dyme Designs, a jewelry line owned by Christina Chan. The event marks the beginning of the hall’s new existence as a shared space dedicated to preserving the arts, music, and culture of Seattle’s South End Communities of Color.

“This [building] is an incubator for all of us. We just want to be the place where folks can come bring their vision to life,” said Naudia Miller, general manager of B&TH.
