by Patheresa Wells

This Sunday, Aug. 14, the Othello Park International Festival is back after a two-year pandemic-related break. For 14 years, this event has offered community members the chance to share their stories and cultures, coming together to celebrate the neighborhood. The festival features food, games, vendors, and yet-to-be-announced performers in a family-friendly atmosphere. The free event will be at Othello Park and Playground, one block east of the Othello light rail station, at 4351 S. Othello Street from noon until 6 p.m.

by Chamidae Ford

It Takes A Village — AMSA Edition, a local nonprofit, will host its fifth annual in-person Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 19, at Othello Park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Ann Okwuwolu, the creator of the festival, is a former medical technician who was inspired to start the celebration in 2016 when she recognized the lack of Black representation in New Holly Community events.

“Everything was geared towards other people. And so we didn’t have any visibility,” Okwuwolu said.

Activists Gather at Othello Park to Call for Cancelling Rent, Continuing Moratorium

by Hannah Krieg

Tenants rights counselor Julissa Sanchez read from her phone at the Cancel the Rent Rally at Othello Park on the afternoon of Saturday, June 5 . She said it would be easier to read without her sunglasses on, because if she took them off, the crowd of a few dozen would see her smeared makeup. Sanchez had been crying.

“The eviction moratorium is great — it has prevented unjust evictions …” Sanchez said. “… but it definitely did not prevent the thousands of thousands of dollars of rental debt that our people are in.”

PHOTOS: Dancing and Popcorn at the Othello Park International Festival

by Carolyn Bick

Ilyas Abdis jumped up and down excitedly, as he waited in line for hot, fresh popcorn.

“Popcorn! Popcorn!” he exclaimed, pointing at the stall.

Beside him, his younger brother Idrees gazed hungrily at the puffy, yellow clouds falling from the popping pot inside the machine. The pair were two of thousands of children who, along with their families, trooped through Othello Park on Aug. 11 for the annual Othello Park International Festival.

Weekend Review: Heritage Parade, Back 2 School Bash, and Othello International Music & Arts Festival

by Susan Fried

In arguably South Seattle’s most event-packed weekend this summer, the Rainier Valley Heritage Parade transformed Rainier Avenue into a playground for a day, the Rainier Beach Back 2 School Bash provided supplies and motivation for South End students for the upcoming school year, and the Othello Park International Music and Arts Festival showcased the area’s vast diversity through song, dance, food, and (of course) a camel petting zoo. Pianos In South Seattle Parks

At an event in Othello Park last Thursday, Seattle Parks and Recreation, King County Parks, Laird Norton Wealth Management, and local arts and business organizations collaborated to launch Pianos in the Parks, by unveiling an elaborately adorned vintage piano.

The Pianos in the Parks campaign placed 20 decorated pianos in parks around the greater Seattle area, including the southend’s own Othello Park and Rainier Beach Plaza, in hopes of encouraging residents to explore green and open spaces while enjoying each others’ art.

“We are delighted to host the pianos at our city parks, Seattle Center and City Hall plaza,” Mayor Murray said. “Pianos in the Parks will enliven our parks and engage communities through the power of art and music.”

“We are thrilled to host this positive and innovative way to bring more people into our parks and to listen to music for all to enjoy,” said Christopher Williams, Acting Superintendent of Seattle Parks and Recreation.

The pianos were procured and donated by Classic Pianos and will be available in the parks until Aug. 17. Members of the public are invited to play the pianos and can upload videos of their park performances to the Pianos in the Parks Facebook page for a chance to play at KEXP’s and Seattle Center’s “Concerts at the Mural” on Friday, Aug. 22.

The Facebook entries that receive the highest number of “likes” will be judged by a community panel and a winner will be selected.

At the end of the campaign, the pianos will be sold to the highest bidder in an online auction on http://www.pianosintheparks.com. Proceeds from the pianos sales will benefit Seattle Parks and Recreation, King County Parks, Seattle Symphony, KEXP and Gage Academy of Art.
