The Great Debate 2021

On the afternoon of Saturday, Oct. 23, attend The Great Debate at the Rainier Arts Center, 3515 S. Alaska St., to hear from candidates for Seattle Mayor, City Council Position 9, City Attorney, and King County Executive.

Moderated by Marcus Green, Mike Davis, and Lance Randall, the schedule is as follows:

  • King County Executive — 12–1 p.m., Dow Constantine • Joe Nguyen 
  • Seattle City Attorney — 1:15–2:15 p.m., Ann Davison • Nicole Thomas-Kennedy
  • Seattle Council Position 9 — 2:30–3:30 p.m., Sara Nelson • Nikkita Oliver
  • Seattle Mayor — 3:45–4:45 p.m., Bruce Harrell • Lorena Gonzalez

COVID-19 protocols for masks and temperature checks will be followed. Attendees will be required to show proof of vaccination or a negative PCR COVID-19 test in the last 48 hours before entering the Rainier Arts Center.

PHOTOS: Hundreds Join Boo Bash for Halloween Fun

Hundreds of costume-clad children and adults showed up at the fifth annual Boo Bash in Rainier Beach to celebrate Halloween at what the organizers describe as “The biggest free Halloween event in the entire region.” There was lots of activities for the families to participate in and a ton of candy to be had at the 82 different trick ot treat stations located throughout the Rainier Beach Safeway parking lot. In addition to the many opportunities for children to fill their bags with candy and treats, they could also take a brief ride on a horse provided by the 10th Cavalry Division Buffalo Soldiers, learn about birds of prey from Jon the Falconer, watch magician Ruben Barron perform tricks, sing Karaoke, listen to stories, or play on three inflatable games provided by Amusements on Demand.

Movies: Opening of Dear White People – Details: Winner of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival’s Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Talent, Dear White People is a sly, provocative satire of race relations in the age of Obama. Community: Columbia City Halloween Trick- or -Treat Details:The Columbia City Business Association CBA will be hosting a neighborhood trick or treat. This is an opportunity for families to go around to local business and collect candy. Community: Boo Bash at the Beach Details: This is the inaugural event, establishing an annual safe and fun place for kids to Trick or Treat through booths sponsored by organizations and community groups, hosted in the east half of the Rainier Beach Safeway’s parking lot.  Booths will feature games and activities, including a photo booth and costume crafting booths. Music:  Royal Room Collective Music Ensemble CD Release and Halloween Party – Details: Wayne Horvitz has continually inspired new Seattle jazz. He launches this extraordinary three-part evening at 6pm leading Royal Room Collective Music Ensemble, a large improvisational ensemble creating incidental music for the silent classic, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. At 8pm the group celebrates its new CD. Music: Jacob Fred Jazz Odyessy – Details: Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey is the acclaimed, road-sharpened trio of Brian Haas (piano/Fender Rhodes/bass Moog/synth), Chris Combs (electric guitar/lap steel guitar/synth), and Josh Raymer (drums). “It swings, it sways, but the jazz trio form in their hands has an almost primitive, inside-your-head, idiosyncratic quality” (DownBeat).
