Annual Seattle/King County Clinic Returned to Seattle Center to Provide Free Medical Care to People From All Walks of Life

Thousands of people flocked to Seattle Center from Feb. 15 to Feb. 18, arriving as early as 5:30 a.m., to receive free vision, dental, and medical care at the annual Seattle/King County Clinic. The clinic, run by a team of about 3,000 volunteer medical professionals, interpreters, and support staff led by founder Julia Colson, has served over 27,000 patients over the last nine years.

“It’s really unbelievable,” said Chelsea Riddick-Most, director of programs and events at Seattle Center. “Patients start at Fisher Pavilion where they get a ticket. Our doors open at midnight but what we’ve seen is people start getting in line around 8 o’clock.”

Seattle Center Holds 37th Annual Naturalization Ceremony

On July 4, at Seattle Center’s Fisher Pavilion, 300 applicants who represented 74 different countries of origin participated in the 37th Annual Naturalization Ceremony. Families and friends crowded around the packed lawn to watch the ceremony, which included members of multiple branches of the armed forces, dressed in uniform, and families dressed in the traditional clothing of nations across the world. The event included remarks by Washington State Gov. Jay Inslee and U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell.

Taking B(l)ack Pride Celebrates Queer and Trans BIPOC With SEACHELLA

Taking B(l)ack Pride (TBP) is Seattle’s only large-scale Pride event that centers on queer, trans, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (QTBIPOC) communities. But TBP is more than just a Pride happening. It is lives. Lives that come together to celebrate, protect, and center their experiences. I spoke with members of TBP in advance of their third celebration, SEACHELLA, on June 25, 2022, at Seattle Center’s Mural Amphitheatre. SEACHELLA will be bigger than ever, featuring QTBIPOC performers from across the nation, food trucks and vendors, community resources, and family-friendly events.

PHOTO ESSAY: ‘Day In Day Out Festival’ Features Local Artists and Food Vendors

Seattle Center’s Fisher Pavilion was filled with music from live performances and the smell of delicious food Saturday, Sept. 4, for the first ever “Day In Day Out Festival,” a small-scale music festival organized by Daydream State, which is also known for organizing the annual “Capitol Hill Block Party.” Guests were required to bring their vaccination card or negative COVID-19 tests to enter the venue.

The limited crowd slowly trickled into the venue around 3 p.m. and consisted largely of young people from the Seattle area. A blow to the event was the absence of two notable artists. Portland rapper Aminé had to cancel his performance after testing positive for COVID-19, while Seattle’s Parisalexa also pulled out of the line-up due to a non-COVID-19 illness. Local singer and rapper LIVt replaced Parisalexa’s slot. Local rapper Sol replaced Aminé’s performance for the day.

Food vendors like the South End’s The Original Philly’s and Central District’s The Fish Box fed hungry music fans into the evening. Headliners Travis Thompson, a Burien rapper, and Haitian-Canadian record producer DJ Kaytranada both drew enthusiastic crowds.

As Seattle Gears Up for Winter Weather, Officials Scramble to Secure Emergency Shelter

Seattle officials are urging residents to prepare for a series of winter storms expected to bring snow and sustained below-freezing temperatures to the region this week, warning that the severe weather could cause power outages, create problems for drivers, and put vulnerable populations at risk.

“We have to check in with our neighbors at times like this, especially our seniors and disabled neighbors,” Mayor Jenny Durkan said at a press conference Wednesday afternoon. “And also remember, you have the responsibility to shovel that sidewalk in front of your property.”

Agencies around King County are gearing up for the severe weather — preparing to clear roads and adjust bus routes, for example — but leaders at Wednesday’s press conference acknowledged the ongoing pandemic will complicate some efforts, such as expanding emergency shelter for people without housing.

Photos: Storm Fans Celebrate Third WNBA Title

Thousands of people lined the streets around Seattle Center for a parade and filled Key Arena for a rally Sunday, September 16, for the WNBA Champion Seattle Storm. The team traveled a short distance around the Seattle Center in trolley cars to the Key Arena, where they were greeted by the adoring fans and a few dignitaries including Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan, Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best, and Washington Senator Maria Cantwell. Six-thousand people filled Key Arena and heard from the players and owners, watched highlights from the season, and cheered wildly when veteran Sue Bird said that she would be back next year for her 17th season.
