Renton Entrepreneur Brings Sea Moss to the South End and Beyond

When Dannett Cage, owner of Beyond Bodi, began a Black-owned business selling skin care and edible products infused with sea moss, it was in response to increasing requests from friends and family to try, and often buy, her homemade products.

“I was really only making it just for my family, like my mom and my household,” Cage recalls. “Then, I made some on a Friday evening as I was going out for a girls’ getaway that weekend, and everyone tried it and couldn’t believe the energy it gave them.”

Focused on Youth Empowerment, Black-Owned QueenCare Opens in Central District Location

On a snowy, sunny day, the luxury body-care product business QueenCare opened the doors of its second location in Seattle on 23rd Avenue South and South Jackson Street in the new Jackson Apartments in the Central District, continuing an interrupted legacy of Black-owned businesses in the district.

“This is so momentous in so many different ways,” said Monika Mathews, the owner of QueenCare products, at the Feb. 11 grand opening. “We’re standing here in the historic Central District of Seattle.”

QueenCare offers a line of skincare products at its new storefront at 3702 S. Hudson St. in Columbia City. But its mission runs deeper, providing mentorship for young women and fighting against the ongoing gentrification in the South End.
