Good Food Kitchens Helps Fund Chefs Making Free Meals for South End Communities

Supporting local food economies, restaurants, and South Seattle neighbors, this program serves up more than just meals.

In March 2020, restaurants were in trouble. Seattle was the U.S. epicenter of COVID-19, and a wave of shutdowns called for the immediate temporary closure of restaurants — some of which never reopened. Food scarcity was exacerbated as closures across all industries led to higher rates of unemployment. These disruptions also affected local farmers, many of whom lost half their major market channels instantly with the closures of schools and restaurants. In the South End, however, a handful of like-minded chefs made arguably one of the savviest pandemic pivots in the industry: They started the Seattle Kitchen Collective.

Local Chef Kristi Brown and the Frye Team Up for a Black Art Inspired Meal

Local chef, Kristi Brown, founder of That Brown Girl Cooks! and co-owner of COMMUNION Restaurant & Bar, has partnered with the Frye Art Museum to create a flavorful meal inspired by their summer exhibit, Black Refractions: Highlights from The Studio Museum in Harlem.

As the name implies, the collection hails from The Studio Museum in Harlem. Founded in the tumultuous year of 1968, The Studio represented a space for Black artists to express themselves and work in a supportive and collaborative environment. Made up from pieces by over 80 artists, Black Refractions features work from the 1920s to the present and displays the wide range of styles and talents of Black creators.

With Grand Opening, ‘Communion’ Ushers in Community, Family, and Food for All

On an uncommonly clear and bright Saturday afternoon, a shimmering gold ribbon was cut, marking the opening of Communion Restaurant & Bar. 

In a time of shuttered restaurants, disappearing small businesses, loss, and fear, Kristi Brown, the founder of culinary brand That Brown Girl Cooks! and the co-owner and chef of Communion Restaurant & Bar, has defied odds and opened the doors of her own establishment.
