OPINION | American Values on the Line in Ukraine

by David Tagliani and Irene Danysh

American values of freedom and dignity for all are exactly what Ukrainians are fighting for — as well as for their very survival. Both will be lost, and the world order forever changed, without Americans’ essential support to put a complete stop to Putin’s unprovoked murderous aggression.

We are Burien and Seattle residents who worked for years in Ukraine and Russia, so when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine one year ago on February 24, 2022, it didn’t take long to decide where we wanted to be.

OPINION | Playing Russian Roulette in Ukraine With Rep. Adam Smith

by Donald A. Smith

Congress, the media, and the public are almost unanimous in their support for what has become a proxy war with Russia, as Ukraine tries to repel Russia’s February invasion.

Anyone who omits the word “unprovoked” when referring to that invasion or who questions the wisdom of the proxy war risks being called a Putin apologist.

OPINION: Seattle Raging Grannies Sing, ‘War Is Not the Answer.’

by Rosy Betz-Zall for the Seattle Raging Grannies

The Seattle Raging Grannies are outraged about the Russian military invasion of Ukraine. We stand up for the independence and safety of all peoples. We admire and grieve for the people of Ukraine and grieve for those doing the fighting and for the suffering of the populace of each country.

Members of Skyway’s Ukrainian Community Center Among Millions Impacted by Ongoing War

The Seattle Globalist was a daily online publication that covered the connections between local and global issues in Seattle. The Emerald is keeping alive its legacy of highlighting our city’s diverse voices by regularly publishing and re-publishing stories aligned with the Globalist’s mission.

One week after Russia began its recent invasion of Ukraine, roughly 1 million Ukrainians have fled the country, and Seattle residents from Ukraine are among the millions more who are dealing with the emotional and personal effects of the war.

“We wake up, and the first thing we do is check to see if our hometowns are still there,” Yuriy Zaremba, a community organizer, told the Emerald. “The fog of war is setting in, and we do have a lot of family out there. So we’ve just been trying to make sure that they’re okay.”

Weekend Reads: The Nature of Bullsh*t

by Kevin Schofield

This weekend’s read is an essay by Peter Ludlow, “The Varieties of Bullshit.” In the age of QAnon, Donald Trump, and now Vladimir Putin spinning up demonstrably false narratives with a stunning level of perceived sincerity, it seems an apt moment to reflect on why this kind of obvious deception is so ubiquitous — and so powerful.

Weekend Reads: How to Talk About a Brutal Dictator

by Kevin Schofield

I’ll begin this week’s column with two confessions. First, I had a completely different “read” planned for this week, but the events in Ukraine caused me to scrap it. Given that he has now emerged (or perhaps more accurately reemerged) as the newest warmongering “strongman” dictator to shatter peace on the European continent, we need to talk about Vladimir Putin.

Second confession: With a nod to Lin-Manuel Miranda, “We Don’t Talk About Putin” has been stuck in my head as I write this. Which is not as far off from the truth as we might like, as we shall see.
