Historic Overtime Bill for Agriculture Workers Provides a Chance at Equal Labor Laws

Washington State has the opportunity to become the second state to provide agriculture workers with overtime compensation.

Currently, farmworkers do not receive overtime pay. In 1938, agriculture workers were specifically excluded from the Fair Labor Standards Act and many researchers have noted that New Deal-era legislation was crafted to block Black and other POC agricultural workers from receiving overtime pay.

Free Tax Preparation Online From United Way of King County

Feb. 12–Apr. 18, 2021

United Way of King County will offer virtual Free Tax Preparation services (available in 20 languages) to low- and moderate-income working families with the assistance of IRS-certified volunteers starting on Friday, Feb. 12. The trained volunteers will help filers claim all the credits for which they are eligible, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which is widely considered a powerful tool to help people get out of poverty. Due to the coronavirus pandemic social distancing guidelines, in-person tax preparation assistance will not be available this year.

Washington State Labor Council First to Pass Resolution Calling for US-Cuba COVID Collaboration

While the rate of infections and deaths due to COVID-19 continue to grow in the United States, with even the President and his wife now becoming infected, the small country of Cuba is making remarkable strides in combating the virus at home as well as throughout the world. For those reasons, the Washington State Labor Council (WSLC) and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Labor Council (MLK Labor) passed resolutions calling for US-Cuba collaboration in the fight against COVID-19.
