On a sunny Saturday morning, a group of people who had never met formed a circle in a forest. One by one, they shared what they hoped to get from spending the day touring Diablo Lake in North Cascades National Park. Some expressed a desire to learn more about history, others were there to meet new friends, still others just wanted to explore their surroundings.
HomeSight, a nonprofit focused on homeownership and economic development, purchased 3.2 acres near the Othello Light Rail Station Friday for use as the site of a new community center. Seattle police say a woman was fatally shot in the parking lot of Borracchini’s Bakery near the North Beacon Hill neighborhood of Seattle. Police believe the car the woman occupied was the target of the attack. The shooting occurred around 6:00pm Wednesday evening. As housing prices in Seattle continue skyward and the specter of gentrification looms, cooperative housing stands as a largely untapped alternative model.
Seattle led the nation in home price increases this summer. Recent data released from Northwest Multiple Listing Service places Seattle’s average single-family house at $666,500. The affordability of rentals hasn’t fared much better. The average monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment increased 38 percent from 1998 to hit $1,412.
