OPINION | House Bill 2065 Would Address Racial Disparities, End Double-Penalizing for Juvenile Offenses

Right now, 422 Indigenous people incarcerated in Washington’s state prisons are serving longer sentences because they were involved in the juvenile system as children.

No one should be penalized twice for crimes committed when they were young. Our focus must be on healing and rehabilitation, not punishment.

Black Lives Matter at School Started in Seattle, Took Root Nationally, Continues With a Week of Action

Black Lives Matter (BLM) at School begins its Week of Action today, Feb. 5 — a week for Seattle Public Schools to focus on empowering Black youth. The movement, now national, started in 2016 at John Muir Elementary School when, upon getting a bomb threat, administrators had to cancel an assembly designed to support its Black students.

PHOTO ESSAY | Seattle Celebrates the Life of MLK Jr. in 2024

Thousands of people ignored the unusually cold temperatures in Seattle to show up for the 41st annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Rally and March at Garfield High School on Jan. 15. This year’s celebration of MLK Jr.’s life was dedicated to longtime supporters of the event, the International Association of Machinists District 751 and Ezell’s Famous Chicken. In addition to a jobs fair that ran from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Garfield High School commons, attendees could choose from 17 different workshops on topics ranging from reproductive justice and bystander intervention to the future of the labor movement and reparations.

Creative Cafe Provides Job Opportunities for Youth and Intergenerational Space for Black Artists

Just in time for Martin Luther King Jr. Day and located on the first floor of Washington Hall, the doors of Creative Cafe are swinging open to welcome in residents of the Central District.

OPINION | Not All Student Enrollment Is Created Equal

In October 2023, Dunlap Elementary School in South Seattle learned that they would have to let go of two of their classroom teachers due to less-than-predicted student enrollment. This had an outsized cascading effect on many students in the school, with split grade classes created, teachers shuffled to different classrooms, and students rearranged to account for this staff reduction. These disruptions happened, of course, after the tone-setting, norm-creating month of September had already passed; students, teachers, and administrators would have to reboot, altering everyone’s expectations for that year.

The South End’s Annual Turkey Bowl Brings Celebration and Service to Seattle All November

The 9th Annual Turkey Bowl — a community-wide week of sports, games, and service — has arrived in the South End once more for 2023. This South End tradition is steeped in a history of getting the community involved in brag-worthy football games and dinners, and benefiting the community through acts of service. This annual event is led year after year by community builder and youth developer Cortez Charles and his organization, the Fatherhood Accountability Movement, aka F.A.M., which allows the work of this one-week event to last year-round by giving young people a place to continue to scratch that itch for service and to be embraced by the community they call home.
