Annual Seattle/King County Clinic Returned to Seattle Center to Provide Free Medical Care to People From All Walks of Life

Thousands of people flocked to Seattle Center from Feb. 15 to Feb. 18, arriving as early as 5:30 a.m., to receive free vision, dental, and medical care at the annual Seattle/King County Clinic. The clinic, run by a team of about 3,000 volunteer medical professionals, interpreters, and support staff led by founder Julia Colson, has served over 27,000 patients over the last nine years.

“It’s really unbelievable,” said Chelsea Riddick-Most, director of programs and events at Seattle Center. “Patients start at Fisher Pavilion where they get a ticket. Our doors open at midnight but what we’ve seen is people start getting in line around 8 o’clock.”

In Setting Aside Silence (One Word At A Time), former victim advocate Shawn Richard-Davis offers a faith-based, interactive book for domestic violence survivors and their families. The book includes words, definitions, and quotes from the Bible to provide survivors with the language to describe their realities, so they can identify their experiences as abuse and seek help. In an interview with the Emerald, Richard-Davis talks about how her nearly 30-year career working for the City of Seattle sparked the motivation behind Setting Aside Silence

Eviction Deadline: Tukwila Refugees March on Seattle City Hall Seeking Help

On the day they are expected to move out of their rooms at the Quality Inn in Kent, the Venezuelan refugees formerly living on the grounds of the Riverton Park United Methodist Church (RPUMC) gathered at Seattle City Hall on Tuesday, Jan. 30, to put forth their requests for assistance to the City Council.

“We need help because today we’ve been told we need to leave the hotel,” said Maria Coronel, one of the refugees staying at the Quality Inn, through an interpreter. “We just want to ask for help with decent housing and work. We don’t want to be a burden to you, but we have a right to have decent housing and help.”

90 Venezuelan Families Seeking Asylum to Be Displaced From Quality Inn in Kent

Ninety Venezuelan families, part of the community of refugees who formerly lived in tents on the grounds of the Riverton Park United Methodist Church, must vacate their hotel rooms at Kent’s Quality Inn by Tuesday, Jan. 30. The group of families, comprising about 170 individuals, were picked up from the church by the local nonprofit Save the Kids and placed in hotel rooms during the drop in temperature a few weeks ago.
